In a recent segment on Face the Nation, Senator Mark Warner shifted the spotlight away from pressing issues regarding national security by blaming U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for a rise in terror-related incidents. According to Warner, changes made within the Federal Bureau of Investigation under Director Kash Patel are to blame, as agents have allegedly been reassigned to focus on immigration rather than counterterrorism work. This claim, however, rests on shaky ground.

Warner’s assertion overlooks a glaring reality: the rise of the current threat landscape is not merely the result of enforcement policies, but is rooted in years of lax border controls. Under Democratic leadership, the southern border was effectively opened, allowing millions to enter without proper vetting. This disregard for border security has resulted in a crisis of unprecedented scale, overwhelming immigration authorities and straining law enforcement resources.

The senator fails to address the documented reality that individuals crossing into the country included those linked to terrorism. Indeed, the FBI has reported alarming numbers of illegal immigrants found on terrorist watchlists—a direct outcome of weak enforcement procedures supported by many Democrats who have historically dismissed border security warnings as unfounded fears.

Warner alluded to the tragic shooting incident at Old Dominion University, where a gunman with prior connections to ISIS was able to carry out an attack. Instead of taking a hard look at how such individuals slip through the cracks, Warner diverted attention to FBI staffing issues. This line of argument does not hold up to scrutiny. Immigration enforcement is not an impediment to national security; it is a critical element of it.

The administration led by Donald Trump recognized this fundamental responsibility, prioritizing strong border enforcement and immigration controls. Actions taken then resulted in a significant reduction in illegal crossings compared to the chaos seen under the current administration. The policies aimed to deter the entry of potentially dangerous individuals faced fierce opposition from Democrats.

Years of fighting against tougher enforcement measures and deriding the necessity of border walls have laid a foundation for the dire consequences now evident in American society. With increasing national security threats presenting themselves within our borders, the focus should not shift to the number of FBI agents working on immigration issues, but rather on why individuals with dangerous backgrounds were ever allowed entry.

Citing immigration enforcement as a contributing factor to terror threats may be politically expedient, but this narrative disregards a crucial truth: robust borders and strict immigration controls are among the best defenses against potential attacks. The national security of the United States hinges on these principles, and it is essential to confront the systemic failures that have allowed vulnerabilities to grow over time.
