Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri is intensifying his push for legislation that expands the government’s ability to denaturalize and deport migrants who commit fraud or serious crimes. His urgent call to action comes during a partial government shutdown that has severely impacted the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). During this standstill, TSA agents are left unpaid, leading to chaos at airports while Democrats resist efforts to strengthen ICE enforcement.

While appearing on Fox News, Schmitt did not hold back his frustration. He attributed the shutdown to the Democrats’ unwillingness to cooperate, branding their actions as “the height of stupidity.” He pointed out that the political standoff heightens security risks at a time when the threat of terrorism is on the rise. Schmitt’s proposed Protect America Act aims to broaden the criteria for revoking citizenship, targeting those who engage in fraud or other serious offenses. “Citizenship should mean something,” he asserted. Schmitt’s stance is clear: those who commit crimes have no place in the country. “The deportations need to continue, and we also need to expand the category of people who can be denaturalized and sent home,” he stated emphatically, reinforcing his position on Fox.

This degradation of governmental function has continued for 27 days, with Senate Democrats blocking funding bills in an attempt to force a rework of ICE’s operations. Schmitt expressed his disdain for what he perceives as a childish reaction. “You can cry about it. You can whine about it. You lost an election over it,” he remarked, highlighting the Democrats’ resistance to confronting the immigration issue decisively.

Republicans have responded firmly, repeatedly voting in favor of funding DHS components such as the TSA and FEMA, only to be thwarted by Democratic opposition. Schmitt argues that “the rule of law is central to our Constitutional order.” He emphasizes that a nation unable to enforce its immigration laws jeopardizes the safety of its citizens. His recently introduced four-point plan seeks to uphold American sovereignty, restore immigration enforcement, defund what he describes as “rogue left-wing NGOs,” and support law enforcement. This thorough approach underscores his belief that maintaining law and order is paramount for the nation’s future. “To secure our future, we must enforce our laws. The American people deserve no less,” Schmitt concluded in a statement when unveiling his legislation.

The discourse surrounding immigration enforcement and the role of government agencies is heated, underscoring stark divisions in current political thought. Schmitt’s proactive stance seeks to address not just the immediate consequences of the current shutdown, but the larger questions of national integrity and public safety. His proposals to enhance deportation criteria reflect a broader philosophy advocating for strict adherence to immigration law, resonating with concerns that view lax enforcement as a direct threat to societal order.
