The recent Democratic primary in Illinois has spotlighted stark divisions within the party, especially regarding representational choices. Kat Abughazaleh, a leftist social media influencer, faced a disappointing defeat after voters chose Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss over her. This election sends a clear message: constituents are wary of celebrity culture infiltrating politics.

Abughazaleh garnered only 26% of the vote compared to Biss’s 30%. Her loss is particularly telling given how her campaign was intertwined with her past as an activist. Known for her controversial political stunts, including a protest that led to her arrest in 2025 for attempting to block ICE vehicles, Abughazaleh has drawn attention and criticism. Although she claimed her actions were aimed at resisting oppressive government practices, they may have ultimately hindered her bid for office.

The 9th Congressional District, currently represented by retiring Jan Schakowsky, has shifted its focus from social media influence to political experience. Biss capitalized on his established background, having spent eight years in the Illinois legislature and previously running a governor’s campaign. His grounding in traditional politics may have resonated more with voters looking for stability rather than the sensationalism often associated with social media notoriety.

While both candidates shared similar progressive objectives, such as abolishing ICE and advocating for a single-payer healthcare system, their divergent paths highlighted a key tension within the Democratic Party. Biss received endorsements from prominent figures such as Schakowsky and Elizabeth Warren, showcasing a preference for moderate progression over the more radical approaches associated with younger activists like Abughazaleh.

However, the influencer’s appeal to younger voters and support from members of the “Squad” suggested a significant, albeit divided, following. Abughazaleh’s relationship with progressives like Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib highlights a generational gap in Democratic ideals. Her campaign attempted to tap into the energy of grassroots movements, aiming to reach those dissatisfied with conventional politics.

Despite her loss, Abughazaleh’s candidacy was not without controversies. Reports surfaced revealing that she grew up in a luxurious home valued at $3.3 million, contrasting sharply with her claims of humble beginnings. In a candid interview, she stated, “Am I poor? Right now, yeah. I have depleted my savings.” This juxtaposition of her financial background against her populist image may have caused skepticism among the very voters she sought to inspire.

Additionally, Abughazaleh’s struggles with public perception were complicated by an incident where she fell asleep during a virtual forum. Her explanation of a narcoleptic episode was met with ridicule, raising questions about her preparedness for a congressional role.

As Biss prepares to face a Republican challenger in the upcoming midterms, he appears poised to secure the seat easily, continuing the Democratic stronghold that has persisted since 1946. This outcome underscores a preference among voters for candidates who demonstrate reliable experience rather than relying on social media fame.

The primary election serves as a microcosm of broader ideological battles within the Democratic Party. It illustrates the ongoing tension between differing visions of progressivism—one rooted in established political pathways and the other emerging from grassroots movements driven by social media influencers. As the landscape of American politics continues to evolve, electoral outcomes will depend on how well candidates align with the sentiments of their constituents.
