Up to 20 people were injured after a driver crashed into a celebratory Lao New Year parade in New Iberia, Louisiana. The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Savannakhet and Melancon Road. Reports indicate the driver is currently in custody.

Initial findings from the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office suggest the driver, believed to be intoxicated, did not strike the crowd intentionally. Acadian Ambulance confirmed that 11 individuals were transported to hospitals by ground, while two others were airlifted for medical care. This reflects the urgency of the situation and the potential severity of some injuries.

The celebration, part of the Buddhist New Year festivities, drew revelers who were caught off guard by the unfortunate event. Eyewitness accounts noted chaos as multiple pedestrians were struck. The sheriff’s office reported that several injuries were serious, raising concerns over safety and security during community gatherings.

In a show of support for the victims, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed his thoughts through a social media post. He wrote, “Sharon and I are praying for all those affected and are grateful for the first responders who have responded to the scene.” This highlights the community’s spirit and the importance of first responders in these critical situations.

As investigators assess the circumstances surrounding the crash, the focus remains on understanding how an event meant for celebration turned tragic. The impact on the victims, their families, and the wider community will likely resonate for some time as they navigate the aftermath of this incident.
