A man from Tennessee has pleaded guilty to serious crimes that reveal a commitment to extremist ideologies. Regan Darby Prater, 28, stood in front of a federal judge in Knoxville and accepted responsibility for his actions, including firebombing a nonprofit organization committed to education and social justice.

Prater admitted to one count of arson and one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, namely Hezbollah. The arson charge stems from an incident where he used a “sparkler bomb,” an incendiary device made with napalm, to destroy a building at the Highlander Research and Education Center in New Market, Tennessee. This facility focuses on grassroots leadership and the Civil Rights Movement.

According to prosecutors, Prater drove from his home to the location, where he ignited the explosive. This act resulted in damages exceeding $1.2 million. Before this, he spray-painted the symbol of the Iron Guard, a paramilitary group associated with Romania’s Nazi Party, in the center’s parking lot. This symbol also appeared on the rifle used in the Christchurch attacks in New Zealand, indicating a dangerous ideological connection. Such actions reveal a troubling mindset steeped in extremist beliefs.

Prater’s motivations were grounded in white supremacist ideology, which he openly acknowledged during court proceedings. His decision to target the Highlander Center was influenced by the organization’s educational focus and its historical ties to civil rights initiatives. This highlights not only his contempt but also the violent lengths to which some individuals will go to challenge institutions that promote equality and justice.

Additionally, Prater’s criminal background includes an attempt to assist Hezbollah, a foreign terrorist organization designated as such by the U.S. since 1997. In 2019, he attempted to provide a document containing the personal information of over 35,000 individuals believed to be affiliated with the Israeli government. His directive, “Start the hunt,” demonstrates an alarming commitment to perpetrating harm against targeted groups.

When he entered his guilty plea, Prater waived the right to be indicted by a Federal Grand Jury. His actions will lead to sentencing on September 9, where he faces a potential prison term of up to 20 years, along with fines and supervised release thereafter. These consequences reflect the seriousness of his actions and the risks posed by individuals who engage in such violent ideologies.

The case of Regan Darby Prater serves as a stark reminder of the threats posed by extremist movements. His willingness to engage in violent acts to further his ideology endangers targeted communities and highlights the need for continued vigilance against rising extremism in society.
