The findings reveal a sharp decline in the desire of people worldwide to migrate to the United States, once a beacon of hope for many. Only 15 percent of respondents in 140 countries selected the U.S. as their preferred destination for migration. This marks a significant drop from 24 percent in 2009 during the Obama administration and a decrease from 18 percent during Trump’s previous term in office.
The survey, which analyzed responses from 144,000 people, also indicates a fading allure of America among potential migrants, particularly in Latin America. In 2024, 33 percent of respondents from this region expressed a desire to move to the U.S., but that number reduced to 28 percent in 2025. Notably, interest from Mexico has decreased from Biden-era highs; only 21 percent of Mexicans now wish to join the ranks of immigrants in the U.S., a drop reminiscent of figures from Trump’s first administration. In Honduras, the sentiment has plummeted even further, with only 36 percent wanting to migrate, down from a staggering 71 percent.
This dramatic shift highlights how Trump’s administration—through a firm stance on illegal immigration and public safety—has shaped international perceptions of the U.S. As Trump has tightened immigration access, the notion of America as a promised land appears to have waned.
