Left-wing media is attempting to reshape the narrative surrounding Afghan refugees still left overseas following Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. In a recent segment, MSNOW suggested that former President Donald Trump is responsible for abandoning Afghan allies who supported the United States during the conflict. This characterization paints a misleading picture, and crucial facts are being left out.

The segment hinges on claims that Afghan nationals currently in Qatar may receive relocation options that exclude the United States. However, this perspective ignores historical context. It was never the case that every Afghan who aided U.S. forces had a blanket promise of resettlement in the U.S.—especially during the Trump administration. The notion that such guarantees were in place is not just overstated; it is misleading. Immigration policy has always been governed by vetting processes, priorities, and logistical limits.

The groundwork for the current state of Afghan refugees was laid by Biden’s chaotic withdrawal in 2021, an operation criticized from both sides of the political aisle. Following the withdrawal, which saw the Taliban seize control almost overnight, many Afghan partners were left stranded. Thousands were placed in temporary holding facilities, including a former U.S. military base in Qatar, where they remain as they await resolution on their futures.

MSNOW’s framing focuses heavily on the human stories—interpreters, special forces affiliates, and families, including numerous children—painting the Trump administration as the villain in this complex situation. This emotional pull does not change the reality that these discussions are about policy adjustments, not abandonment. The delays and logistical challenges stem from a hasty withdrawal, not a lack of commitment to these individuals.

Furthermore, the segment seems to ignore the existing double standards when discussing U.S. obligations. Under Biden’s administration, the country has seen an unprecedented surge in border crossings, with record numbers of foreign nationals entering the U.S. under less stringent scrutiny. In this context, claims of strict obligations to resettle specific Afghan groups seem inconsistent. The U.S. immigration system is already overwhelmed; the narrative that failing to resettle everyone immediately equates to abandonment does not hold up against the facts.

To claim that alternatives to immediate resettlement are “anti-American” is a flawed argument that disregards the long-standing nature of refugee policy, which often includes coordination with other nations. Resettlement does not automatically equate to coming directly to the U.S., especially when managing large populations presents additional challenges. The essential story gets lost amidst the emotional framing: it’s not that Trump “turned away” allies, but rather a situation stemming from a flawed exit strategy that continues to affect thousands of lives today.

Consequently, it seems that rather than confronting the messy reality created by the 2021 withdrawal, certain media outlets prefer to lean into narratives that distract from the facts. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how these narratives will shift in light of the ongoing refugee crisis, which is still very much a result of decisions made during the Biden administration.
