The United States Marine Corps is making significant strides with its new initiative, “Campaign – Alaska.” This strategic program aims to enhance operational capacities in the Arctic, reflecting the increasing importance of this region in global dynamics. The campaign is anchored on two major components: the Marine Rotational Force – Alaska (MRF – Alaska) and the establishment of the Supporting Arms Liaison Team – Alaska (SALT – Alaska). The focus is clear: adapt to the unique challenges and strategic opportunities posed by the Arctic environment.

According to the 2026 National Defense Strategy, key areas from the Arctic to South America are crucial for both homeland defense and strategic competition. Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Eric Smith, underscored this point, stating that “the Arctic is a region of growing strategic importance.” He emphasized that the Marine Corps must be ready to operate successfully in this harsh environment. With this campaign, troops will be positioned, trained, and equipped to engage effectively on a global scale.

The MRF – Alaska, operating under Marine Forces Northern Command (MARFORNORTH), will engage in persistent and multi-domain training in Alaska. Participating in joint exercises like Arctic Edge and Red Flag will allow Marines to hone their skills in Arctic conditions. This effort aims to bolster homeland defense and enhance cooperation with joint and allied forces. “In this era of strategic competition, Alaska is critical to homeland defense,” noted Lt. Gen. Bobbi Shea, commanding general of MARFORNORTH. The focus is on maintaining a combat-ready posture that supports broader national defense objectives.

Additionally, SALT – Alaska will establish a permanent detachment at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). This detachment of the 6th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company builds on a Marine Corps presence that has existed since 1985. SALT – Alaska will also strengthen training and operational capabilities while ensuring close coordination with joint forces and local communities. By fiscal year 2027, this presence will provide continuity in Arctic operations and facilitate swift enhancements to the force when needed.

In summary, Campaign – Alaska represents a thoughtful approach to address the complexities of Arctic operations. By melding rotational training efforts with permanent capabilities, the Marine Corps is crafting a meaningful and robust presence in the region. The initiative is a proactive measure to project power, secure the homeland, and deter potential adversaries effectively.

As Lt. Gen. Shea remarked, “Alaska will only grow in strategic importance. The Marine Corps is committed to ensuring we are prepared to operate in the High North.” This commitment signals a determined approach to meet the realities of a shifting geopolitical landscape where the Arctic plays an increasingly central role.
