In a remarkable tale of survival, two pet goats became unexpected heroes during a catastrophic tornado in Enid, Oklahoma, last month. On April 23, when a tornado emergency warning rang out, Adam Sloat and his family sought refuge in an underground storm cellar, fearing the worst. An EF-4 tornado, with winds between 170 and 200 mph, didn’t just destroy their home; it also buried the family under rubble.
“We were relaxing, watching the NFL draft on TV when the signal went off,” Sloat recounted, detailing the moments leading up to the storm. The Sloats, along with their teenage daughter and two neighbors, rushed into the shelter just moments before the tornado unleashed its fury at around 8 p.m. The chaos inside the cellar was palpable as the storm engulfed their property, accompanied by the terrifying sound of glass shattering and debris crashing down.
As they huddled together, disaster struck when the shelter’s doors were slammed shut by a collapsing chimney, leaving them trapped beneath a mountain of bricks. Despite managing a 911 call after the storm had passed, rescuers couldn’t pinpoint their location under the wreckage. It was then that the family’s two goats, Percy and Penny, provided an unexpected lifeline.
“My daughter and I could have sworn that we heard goat noises, and I thought there’s no way,” Sloat shared. The persistent bleating of the goats, who had miraculously weathered the storm, drew the attention of rescuers. Sloat explained: “The rescuers had no idea where we were, but Percy and Penny knew. They stood right over us and kept up a steady stream of noise until the emergency people came over and started removing the bricks.” This detail underscores the bond between humans and their pets, illuminating how animals can provide comfort and guidance even in dire circumstances.
Ultimately, the Sloats and their neighbors were pulled from the wreckage, awestruck at the sight of their devastated surroundings. “We finally emerged and couldn’t believe our eyes. Everything was gone,” Sloat said, capturing the shock and disbelief that followed their harrowing ordeal. A firefighter later confirmed the critical role of the goats, mentioning, “We had no idea where you were until we saw your goats.”
While the tornado left significant destruction in its wake, authorities reported only minor injuries among residents. The Sloats are now beginning the daunting task of rebuilding their home, a testament to resilience in the face of calamity. Throughout this event, the actions of Percy and Penny remind us that compassion and survival instincts can come from the most unlikely sources, reinforcing the deep connections we share with animals.
