Beijing recently introduced the Type 054B frigate, promoting it as a significant leap forward for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy. However, this claim appears exaggerated under scrutiny. While the Type 054B represents a marked improvement over the Type 054A, the reality is it does little to narrow the substantial naval gap between China and the United States.

In 2026, Global Firepower ranks the United States first among 145 nations in overall military might, a status it has maintained since the index began. The long-term competition in naval power remains firmly in favor of the US. Development of the Type 054B began in 2016, aiming to enhance the capabilities of its predecessor. Reports indicate hull modules nearing completion at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in late 2022. The lead ship, Luohe, was launched in August 2023, with commissioning in January 2025. Its counterpart, Qinzhou, followed in May 2025. Both vessels enhance China’s naval presence, yet they do not alter the fundamental strategic balance.

The 054B is notably larger, featuring improved armament, including a 32-cell vertical launch system and advanced radar systems. Experts confirm that these enhancements include better anti-submarine warfare sensors and a more effective command structure. While such upgrades make the 054B a more capable escort for naval formations, they primarily bolster China’s operations in the near seas. Here, frigates like the 054B could enhance the defense of task forces, serving as a protective screen for larger vessels.

Yet, it is crucial to note that claims of extending operational reach into the Western Pacific are misleading. The limitations on China’s naval reach stem from inadequate infrastructure for overseas operations. Currently, China has only one recognized military logistics facility in Djibouti and potential access in Ream, Cambodia. Its presence in the Western Pacific is limited to artificial islands in the South China Sea, which lack comprehensive repair facilities and are vulnerable to US and allied strikes.

Conversely, the US Navy benefits from a robust network of bases across the Indo-Pacific, significantly extending its operational capability. With established bases in Yokosuka, Guam, and Pearl Harbor, along with allied support across Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines, the US retains the upper hand. The Burke-class destroyer fleet and Virginia-class submarines offer unmatched capabilities, effectively countering the enhancements that the 054B brings.

Moreover, better sensors and enhanced air defense on the Chinese frigate do not change the fundamentals of US naval dominance. The US employs a diverse fleet structure that does not hinge on a single ship type, thus mitigating any potential advantage posed by advancements such as the 054B. Even with a growing number of vessels, China’s advances do not equate to parity with US maritime power.

China’s rapid ship production and continuous upgrades are noteworthy developments to monitor. However, these efforts have yet to pose a tangible challenge to US naval superiority, which is anchored in superior infrastructure, operational experience, and a proven ability to project power across vast distances.

Ultimately, while the Type 054B is an impressive technological achievement, it does not change the strategic dynamics of maritime power in the Pacific, where the United States remains the undisputed leader.
