Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has gained significant momentum in his bid for the Senate, thanks to a wave of endorsements from prominent Republican leaders. Most notably, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., publicly declared his support for Paxton on the Hugh Hewitt show right after a contentious primary concluded. This announcement underscores the urgency within the GOP to rally around Paxton as he prepares to face Texas state Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic nominee, in the upcoming November election.
Thune emphasized the importance of Paxton’s nomination for the future of the GOP and the state, stating, “We got to pivot and go all in to make sure that we keep Texas red.” His focus on the need for a unified front reflects the stakes of the election. “That seat is gonna be very key to our majority, which will determine the future of this country,” he added, highlighting the broader implications of the Texas Senate race.
Despite the enthusiasm from Thune and others, Paxton was not the initial favorite among GOP leaders. Throughout the bruising primary campaign, many in the Senate sided with longtime incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. This shift in allegiance became particularly pronounced after President Donald Trump’s late endorsement of Paxton, just a week before the runoff election. The GOP’s apprehension was palpable; there were concerns that Paxton’s victory could potentially alter the balance of power in the Senate, especially since Democrats have struggled to secure a Senate seat in Texas since 1988.
Paxton now faces Talarico, who emerged victorious in his own primary race without significant resistance. This has forced Republican leaders to consolidate their efforts and put aside personal preferences in favor of party unity. Thune’s remarks emphasized the necessity of securing a win in Texas, stating, “Losing is not an option when it comes to the state of Texas, and what it means for our majority in the Senate.”
The support for Paxton has not stopped with Thune. Other Senate Republicans have quickly lined up behind him, recognizing the need for a united front against Talarico. For instance, Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, wasted no time in expressing his backing for Paxton on social media, calling for the party to unite and focus on defeating the Democratic nominee. Moreno labeled Talarico a “far left freak” for his policy positions, which include support for open borders and progressive social issues.
Shortly thereafter, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., joined the chorus, branding Talarico as “a rubber stamp for open borders, illegal immigrant criminals, and men playing in women’s sports.” His comments reinforce the GOP narrative framing Talarico as too extreme for Texas, with an emphasis on the stakes for the broader Republican agenda.
This rallying of support illustrates the strategic nature of Paxton’s candidacy and the urgency felt by Republican leaders in the face of an energized Democratic opponent. As election day approaches, the pressure is on for Paxton and the GOP to maintain their foothold in Texas, signifying not just a local battle but a crucial element in the national political landscape. The endorsements and urgent calls for party unity indicate that the Republican establishment is ready to shift gears, putting aside past allegiances to focus on a common goal: preserving a Republican seat in the Senate.
