On Friday, reports surfaced that President Trump convened advisors in the Situation Room to assess the ongoing conflict with Iran. This meeting highlighted Trump’s intent to “make a final determination” and potentially sign a deal. Over the past weekend, he introduced a “largely negotiated” framework known as a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that includes a 60-day ceasefire and provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the plan calls for concessions from Iran concerning its nuclear enrichment and aims to establish a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

Despite these ambitious proposals, a final deal has yet to be reached. President Trump is seeking amendments to the structure of the agreement during the discussions. In Iran, however, turmoil continues to rise. There are reports suggesting that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has submitted a resignation letter to the Office of the Supreme Leader, citing a lack of involvement in key decision-making processes.

Iran International reported on Sunday that Pezeshkian’s letter indicates that his government had been marginalized, allowing hard-line factions within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to gain control over vital affairs. The president expressed in his letter that such circumstances made it impossible for him to govern effectively or fulfill his legal responsibilities, which led him to request an immediate resignation.

However, Pezeshkian has denied these claims. The IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency reported that he remains in office and is continuing to perform his duties. This was further supported by Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, the deputy head of communications at the president’s office, who dismissed the resignation rumors and stated, “Pezeshkian would not step back from serving the people.”

Pezeshkian’s leadership has faced scrutiny, particularly in light of his recent comments acknowledging that Iran has suffered “harm” from U.S. attacks. This admission raised eyebrows within a regime striving to project strength. During a televised meeting of the Government Information Council, he urged officials to “face reality,” drawing attention to the pressures the government and country face.

The internal dynamics in Iran seem to be marked by a struggle for control as revolutionary ideals collide with the realities of governance. Whether Pezeshkian remains a credible leader will depend on how he navigates these challenges amid increasing pressure both domestically and from international stakeholders. His ability to effectively manage this tumultuous environment remains in question, especially as he continues to deny rumors of his resignation while the legitimacy of his position hangs in the balance.
