Another contentious chapter in the Los Angeles mayoral race is unfolding as ballot counts raise eyebrows. Democratic City Councilwoman Nithya Raman has surged to just 1% behind Spencer Pratt, with approximately 200,000 ballots still yet to be counted. Critics are questioning the integrity of these results as late-arriving ballots continue to be tallied. The race has already seen its share of drama, as Mayor Karen Bass looks set to advance to a runoff.
Current counts show Pratt leading by a slim margin of 7,494 votes, equating to roughly 1.1% of the ballots counted so far. The final count remains uncertain, as reports suggest that the remaining uncounted ballots will likely favor the Democratic candidates. In a significant update from the latest results, Raman received more than double the votes Pratt did on Saturday, a clear indication that the race is intensifying.
The vote breakdown reveals how close the contest has become: Raman pulled in 23,514 votes (about 40.2%), while Bass managed 19,312 (33.0%), leaving Pratt trailing at 10,336 votes (17.7%). Notably, Raman’s performance exceeded expectations, outperforming her benchmark against Pratt by a whopping 14 points.
Amid these developments, the legitimacy of the counting process has come under scrutiny. Steve Kornaki from NBC outlined how early mail-in ballots had initially favored Pratt, giving him a solid lead right up until the in-person results were released. His lead expanded further by 12,000 votes at that point, leading many to feel confident in his position. However, as Kornaki predicted, the subsequent mail-in ballots—which he noted could account for about a third of the total in Los Angeles—were expected to tilt toward the Democratic candidates, leading to speculation and distrust surrounding the late-arriving ballots.
Further complicating the matter, Bill Essayli, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, has announced multiple investigations into election fraud, a move meant to reassure the public amid growing discontent. He encouraged anyone with potential fraud evidence to reach out with tips to a dedicated email address.
In a media appearance, Spencer Pratt himself conveyed confusion and frustration regarding the vote counting process as he scrutinized recent developments. He posted a video asking, “Me trying to figure out how votes get counted in LA.”
The criticisms don’t stop there. As the stakes rise, Steve Hilton, a gubernatorial candidate endorsed by Trump, lambasted California’s voting practices, deeming the mail-in voting process “absolutely shameful.” He drew comparisons to India’s ability to count over 640 million votes in one day, suggesting that California’s inefficiencies lead to national embarrassment. Hilton champions reforms to eliminate excessive mail-in voting and to require ballots to arrive by election day, as well as pre-counting early mail-in votes to expedite the process.
The latest updates signal that this mayoral contest is far from over. With tensions running high, the outcome could hinge on how remaining ballots are accounted for and the ongoing investigations into election integrity.
