Governor Greasy Gavin Newsom of California is on a mission to keep abortion available in red states, trying to blackmail red states into holding off on passing anti-abortion laws by encouraging Hollywood to boycott those red states with anti-abortion laws.
He did so in the form of both a tweet and a statement, saying that he was going to be pressuring Hollywood to boycott those red states that are protecting infants and fighting against abortion.
Announcing the project to get businesses to ditch red states by offering subsidies (tax credits) to those that “come home” to the Golden State on Twitter, Greasy Gavin said:
Today, Hollywood will wake up to this ad. Time to choose. You can protect your workers, or continue to support anti-abortion states that rule with hatred. We’re here for you. We’re extending tax credits for those that come home to the Golden State. Choose freedom. Choose CA.
Included in the tweet was a statement in which Newsom started off by saying:
Over the past several years, the legislatures of states like Georgia and Oklahoma have waged a cruel assault on essential rights. Now, in the wake of the Supreme Court’s abhorrent decision overturning Roe v. Wade, those same states are moving quickly to strip reproductive freedom.
Continuing, Newsom then went on to bizarrely claim that California is a “freedom” state and encouraged businesses to boycott the red states, saying:
Today more than ever, you have a responsibility to take stock of your values — and those of your employees — when doing business in those states.
California is a freedom state: Freedom to tell your stories. Freedom to access the health services you need, including abortion care.
Returning to the “freedom” point later in the statement, Newsom then said:
So to those in power to make decisions about where to film, where to hire, where to open new offices, we in California say: Walk the walk.
Choose freedom. Choose creativity. Choose California.
Utter absurdity, particularly given that California is one of the least free states in America.
Newsom also, when defending the bill that would provide tax credits to those wokies that return to Hollywood, Newsom also championed diversity, saying:
“Extending this program will help ensure California’s world-renowned entertainment industry continues to drive economic growth with good jobs and a diverse, inclusive workforce.”
Though he frames it as a defense of diversity and abortion, the real intent of Newsom’s encouragement for studios to return to California is obvious: he wants to lure them back from Georgia.
Many films are now filmed in the Peach State rather than the Golden State becuase it is much friendlier to business, has far lower taxes, and is a less expensive place to live and work.
Newsom, as many wokies tend to do, is obviously trying to use a hot-button political topic to cover for his desperation and inability to compete on non-political grounds. We’ll see if it works, though even with the tax credits California looks like an unattractive place to do business.
