A wheelchair-bound veteran shot a man attempting to rob him, taking him for a helpless and stationary victim at a bus stop. Though he collapsed after taking multiple slugs at the scene of the avoided crime, the would-be robber was taken to an area hospital and expected to survive.
“The victim was in a wheelchair when a man approached him and tried to steal a bag. He pulled out a gun and shot the robber several times, according to police,” reported KHOU 11 on Twitter.
An attached article to the tweet said that the suspect “was hit but managed to run ‘several hundred yards’ away from the bus stop before ultimately collapsing due to his injuries. First responders eventually took the man to a hospital, “where he was treated for the gunshot wounds,” the article continued.
The veteran in the wheelchair said he was simply waiting for a ride to go home when the suspect ambushed him.
Unfortunately, the attack on the veteran is not an isolated incident for the city of Houston. Run by mostly Democrats, the metropolis features common traits of other urban, Democrat-managed cities such as violent crime and murder.
Writing in Houston Public Media, an affiliate of NPR, one journalist noted the shocking number of murders, saying:
According to HPD, the latest crime analysis for last year shows overall violent crime was down 8% and the murder rate was down 9% compared to 2021. There were 435 murders last year, compared to 477 the year before. The report also showed a decrease in other violent crime categories with robberies down by 9%, aggravated assaults down by 8%, and sexual assaults down by 18%.
Of course, the slant in the piece is that many of the figures are down. What they choose to omit is that the raw numbers are still astronomically high. Going to 435 murders from 477 might be lower statistically, but it’s not an accomplishment. An average of one murder a day would be horrifying in a civilized age, but unfortunately just seems low compared to blood-drenched cities like Chicago.
In any case, the would-be victim, the wheelchair-bound veteran, is fortunate that he lives in a state that generally respects the right to use deadly force to fight off attackers.
Under Texas Penal Code § 9.31, “a person is justified in using force against another when and to the degree, the actor reasonably believes the force is immediately necessary to protect the actor against the other’s use or attempted use of unlawful force.” There’s no duty to retreat, no duty to back down. The force used just has to be reasonable in light of what was going on, which sure seems to be the case here.
That’s a far cry from blue states, where firearm ownership is discouraged and there are strict limitations on when you can carry those guns and when you can use deadly force to defend yourself from a thug. What a world we live in where those criminals are protected at the expense of law-abiding citizens!
