Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA) might never live down the jokes about his alleged involvement with Chinese spies.

On Wednesday, Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) took the jab further, implying that Swalwell, who reportedly had ties with a Chinese spy last year, “knows a thing or two about how China penetrates our government.”

“I find it incredibly rich Mr. Swalwell was going to come to this committee and lecture us about how China penetrates our government. I think that’s something he may know a thing or two about,” stated Rep. Waltz, scanning the committee room with a pointed glance.

The suggestive remark emerged as House Republicans pressed forward with their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Swalwell, an ally of Biden, had previously been under scrutiny by the House Ethics Committee following revelations that his associate Christine Fang was linked to an investigation into Chinese espionage activities within the United States. Fang was suspected of targeting Swalwell’s campaign and budding politicians in California.

WATCH:

Swalwell cooperated with the FBI during its probe and was cleared of any wrongdoing in May last year. However, his adversaries continue to use the Chinese spy allegations to undermine the once-vocal progressive. He has faced ridicule at town hall meetings in his district and publicly clashed with GOP colleagues over previous jests made at his expense.

The internet didn’t hold back in reacting to Waltz’s dig at the Democrat.

“Swalwell has to hang it up now. He won’t bounce back from this burn,” quipped one commentator.
