A spokesperson for Fetterman’s office informed KDKA-TV that following the crash, both John and Gisele were taken to a local hospital for evaluation as a precautionary measure. Sen. Fetterman was treated for a bruised shoulder, and they were discharged later that afternoon. “They are doing well and happy to be back in Braddock,” the spokesperson stated.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and no citations have been issued. Medical attention was required for a passenger from the Traverse and the driver of the Impala, both of whom were transported by ambulance to War Memorial Hospital in West Virginia for treatment of their injuries.
Sen. Fetterman has previously faced significant health challenges. In May 2022, he suffered a stroke caused by atrial fibrillation, just before the Pennsylvania Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate. This condition led to the implantation of a pacemaker and defibrillator to regulate his heart’s rhythm and prevent future strokes. Additionally, Fetterman has been open about his struggles with depression, particularly following his stroke. Early in 2023, he sought treatment for clinical depression, highlighting the importance of mental health awareness and treatment.
During a recent appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Fetterman discussed how his health issues influenced his perspective and policy positions. When Maher asked if his near-death experience had given him a new sense of freedom, Fetterman agreed, drawing a comparison to a line from the Joker in the first “Batman” movie: “I’ve been dead once already. It’s very liberating.” He expressed that his experiences have freed him to speak more openly about his beliefs without fear of backlash.
Regarding his stance on party lines and the October 7 events, Fetterman noted a shift in his position. He emphasized his commitment to supporting Israel and suggested that the Democrats have increasingly distanced themselves from this stance. “After what happened on October 7, I really knew that whole progressive stack would be blasted apart,” Fetterman said, underscoring his belief in the importance of standing with Israel despite potential political repercussions within his party.
