Rep. Andy Ogles has taken the bold step of initiating impeachment proceedings against Vice President Kamala Harris, accusing her of high crimes and misdemeanors. The charges, announced on Friday, focus on her handling of border issues and allege that she has failed to uphold the Constitution and fulfill her duties as Vice President.
The impeachment articles against Harris claim she has “willfully and systemically refused to uphold Federal immigration laws.” They accuse her of “willfully prevent[ing], obstruct[ing], and imped[ing] the administration of justice” in her role.
“Kamala Harris has demonstrated extraordinary incompetence in the execution of her duties and responsibilities, a stark refusal to uphold the existing immigration laws, and a palpable indifference to people of the United States suffering as a result of the ongoing southern border crisis in the United States,” Ogles’ statement reads. It continues, “Vice President Harris has consistently refused to visit the southern border to evaluate this ongoing national crisis, aside from a single trip hundreds of miles away from the epicenter of the migrant crisis.”
The articles further cite specific incidents where women and girls were victims of violent crimes by illegal aliens, attributing these tragedies to Harris’s inaction. The statement highlights cases such as the rape and murder of Rachel Morin in August 2023 and other violent crimes committed by illegal aliens in subsequent months.
According to POLITICO’s Olivia Beavers, Ogles noted that the resolution has been crafted to hold privileged status, but the timing of when he will proceed with it remains uncertain. Ogles remarked, “It depends on when we’re here. I mean, there’s some talk that we won’t even be here on Thursday.” When asked if he aims to resolve this before the August recess, he responded, “If our work isn’t done, why would we leave?” He expressed dissatisfaction with the upcoming recess, emphasizing, “I think we have Appropriations bills to address and we need to impeach the vice president.”
The U.S. border has been a contentious issue since the Biden-Harris administration took office, with Republicans criticizing their policies for leading to an increase in illegal crossings and a crisis at the southern border. The termination of the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims were processed in the U.S., marked a significant shift. Encounters at the southern border have reached historic highs, and Harris, appointed by Biden to address the root causes of migration from Central America, has faced ongoing backlash over her handling of the crisis.
