As the Secret Service continues to grapple with the fallout from the near-fatal assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, the agency has reportedly issued a new code name for vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance.

The Ohio Republican, who is running alongside Trump in his bid to return to the White House, will now be known by the Secret Service code name “Bobcat,” according to a report by the Daily Mail, which cited a friend of Vance’s. Fox News Digital has reached out to both the Trump-Vance campaign and the Secret Service for comment.

“Bobcats” is the nickname for both Ohio University and Breathitt County High School, in Jackson, Kentucky, the Senator’s hometown which he profiled in “Hilbilly Elegy,” his bestselling 2016 memoir.

Secret Service code names are traditionally assigned to presidents, vice presidents, first ladies, and other prominent figures under the agency’s protection. While these code names once had a genuine cloak-and-dagger purpose to ensure the security of the nation’s top leaders, today they are largely ceremonial. The names facilitate clear and concise communication in high-pressure situations, despite the advent of encrypted technology.

A Secret Service spokesperson once told The Washington Post that the selection of these code names is often driven by “sheer whim.” However, they typically reflect some aspect of the individual’s personal history or heritage and often feature alliteration within families, adhering to a longstanding tradition.

President Donald Trump’s official code name is “Mogul,” while former First Lady Melania Trump’s “Muse.”
