President Trump has taken significant steps to address rising violent crime in Washington, D.C., announcing plans on August 11, 2025, to invoke federal control over the city’s Metropolitan Police Department. This decision, grounded in Section 740 of the DC Home Rule Act, allows the President to intervene in local law enforcement during emergencies. In his statement, Trump emphasized the necessity of this move, claiming it would “Make DC Safe Again.”
The initial results are noteworthy. FBI Director Kash Patel reported that law enforcement has made 45 arrests, with a significant number linked to the violent crime surge. Among those arrested was 37-year-old Sean Charles Dunn, who faced accusations of assaulting a federal officer with a sandwich, an act caught on tape. Dunn shouted profanities at the officer before the incident. Patel detailed other arrests for serious charges, including child sex abuse material, illegal firearms, and drug trafficking.
Adding to the development, 29 individuals identified as undocumented immigrants were removed from the city, many of whom had final orders of removal. In an update on operations, Patel expressed confidence: “The FBI and our partners made 45 arrests… Charges include: Assault on a federal officer, Possession of child sex abuse material, Illegal firearms, Drug trafficking.”
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt backed these efforts, declaring that Washington, D.C. will serve as a sanctuary solely for law-abiding citizens and tourists. “The District of Columbia will only be a sanctuary for law-abiding citizens,” she asserted, reinforcing the administration’s stance on crime reduction and maintaining public safety.
Critics on the left, however, have expressed discontent with Trump’s approach. Despite their complaints, Trump’s actions reflect a commitment to restoring order in what he deemed a city plagued by crime and disorder. His administration’s strategy appears to resonate with those who feel the current state of D.C. requires immediate attention and significant reform.
