Former first lady Hillary Clinton recently praised former President Donald Trump, stating she would nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize if he could secure an end to the war in Ukraine on favorable terms for Kyiv. On the “Raging Moderates” podcast hosted by Jessica Tarlov, Clinton outlined her criteria for such a nomination, highlighting the need for Trump to facilitate an outcome that does not require Ukraine to concede territory to Russia.
“If he could bring about the end to this terrible war where Putin is the aggressor—invading a neighboring country, trying to change the borders—if he could end it without putting Ukraine in a position where it had to concede its territory,” Clinton said, emphasizing the importance of Ukraine standing firm against Russian aggression.
Clinton’s comments come just before Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, marking the first U.S.-Russia summit since June 2021. Trump described the upcoming discussions as a “feel-out meeting,” focused on whether a ceasefire could be achieved. He expressed hope for peace, saying, “I’d like to see a ceasefire… the best deal that could be made for both parties.” Trump acknowledged that establishing peace would ultimately require cooperation between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The former president also warned of “very severe consequences” for Russia should Putin refuse to negotiate, asserting that both nations must come to the table for a resolution. “It takes two to tango,” Trump remarked, implying that both sides have a role to play in achieving lasting peace.
Clinton’s remarks suggest a complex relationship with Trump, who often finds himself at the center of controversy. By extending this potential nomination, Clinton appears to recognize an opportunity for bipartisan praise in pursuit of peace in Ukraine, a situation that continues to evolve. As Trump gears up for discussions with Putin, the spotlight remains on whether meaningful dialogue can unfold from this endeavor.
