Terry Cole, the new Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator, is stepping up to tackle crime in Washington, D.C. After a surge in violent incidents, including the tragic murder of a Congressional intern, Cole has been designated to oversee operations within the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). “We cannot afford to turn a blind eye,” Cole emphasized during an interview with Fox News. His commitment is clear: he wants local police to have the support they need to effectively manage growing crime.
This initiative follows Attorney General Pam Bondi’s announcement on Monday, declaring a significant federal intervention in the nation’s capital. In her order, Bondi stated that Cole’s new role aims to enhance cooperation between the MPD and federal immigration authorities. A DOJ spokesperson highlighted that “Attorney General Bondi’s new order is STRONGER” because it enforces full compliance with immigration laws, indicating no leniency will be shown despite existing MPD policies.
Washington D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith will remain in her position, but Cole’s authority will direct her and Mayor Muriel Bowser to align with federal efforts. The collaboration is not just about leadership; it has already begun yielding results. Since the federal takeover, dozens of arrests have involved illegal immigrants as agencies like ICE bolster their patrols in the capital.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin weighed in on the matter, expressing confidence in Cole’s leadership. “I’m glad to see it happen under the leadership of Terry Cole,” Youngkin said. He acknowledged Cole’s previous accomplishments in Virginia, particularly in drug enforcement. Youngkin recalled how Cole’s work resulted in considerable drug seizures, emphasizing the type of leadership needed to prioritize public safety.
As Cole takes charge, the focus remains on ending the violence that has plagued the city. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson reiterated the administration’s commitment to public safety, stating, “President Trump will continue pursuing all efforts to Make DC Safe Again and end violent crime despite liberal opposition.” With federal oversight now in action, many anticipate a renewed focus on law enforcement and a community ready to reclaim their streets.
