A cargo ship explosion rocked Baltimore Harbor on Monday evening, sending a massive fireball into the sky. Witnesses captured the moment on video, showing the shocking eruption from the vessel. While the cause of the explosion remains unknown, authorities are responding promptly.
According to reports from the Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD), firefighters quickly arrived on the scene after receiving multiple calls about the explosion aboard a commercial vessel. Both land and water units deployed, including the BCFD’s fireboats, to tackle the situation. As they approached, they identified the vessel as the W-Sapphire, a 751-foot bulk carrier that showed signs of damage consistent with an explosion and fire. Thankfully, the ship remained afloat and was assisted by tugboats.
Officials confirmed that all 23 crew members were accounted for and completely uninjured, a small relief amid the chaos. Fireboats stayed on site as the Coast Guard and other agencies launched an investigation into the incident. The vessel is set to be moved to a designated anchorage area and will remain there until further evaluations are completed by the Coast Guard.
This alarming event has drawn attention, not only for the dramatic explosion but also for the effective emergency response. With no injuries reported, the focus now shifts to understanding what ignited this dangerous incident on the busy waterway.
