Boston Mayor Michelle Wu recently held a press conference in response to a federal warning threatening to cut off funding if the city does not comply with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Wu declared, “Unlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law,” highlighting an ironic stance considering her refusal to adhere to immigration law.
Boston has designated itself a sanctuary city under the 2014 Trust Act. This law limits local police cooperation with ICE regarding civil immigration detainers, preventing officers from asking about immigration status or detaining individuals based solely on ICE requests. This policy is just one aspect of Wu’s broader approach, which has drawn the ire of federal officials.
Wu has further escalated tensions by demanding that ICE provide transparency about arrests in Boston. She suggested that ICE should “take a time out” in a direct message to ICE Director Tom Homan. Her comments reflect a troubling disregard for federal enforcement efforts as she accuses ICE agents of employing “secret police tactics,” even though their actions are rooted in safety concerns arising from threats against their identities and families.
On the federal side, officials have condemned Wu’s sanctuary policies as counterproductive and hazardous to public safety. Patricia Hyde, Acting Field Office Director of ICE, reported nearly 1,500 illegal immigrant offenders apprehended in Massachusetts, citing serious charges like rape and assault. She emphasized that ICE will continue its operations despite local resistance.
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons has promised to amplify federal enforcement in sanctuary jurisdictions, declaring, “Sanctuary does not mean safer streets; it means more criminal aliens out and about the neighborhood.” This statement outlines the stark reality many federal officials believe stems from sanctuary policies.
The backlash against Mayor Wu’s approach extends beyond ICE. U.S. Attorney Leah Foley called her rhetoric “reckless and inflammatory.” The White House also weighed in, labeling Wu’s statements as “disgusting” and dangerous, while Representative Anna Paulina Luna pledged to refer Wu for investigation, emphasizing the consequences of obstructing federal immigration enforcement.
As federal authorities tighten their grip, the pressure on sanctuary cities like Boston increases. The Justice Department has issued ultimatums to various jurisdictions, threatening prosecution and the loss of federal funds unless compliance is observed. Wu, amid these challenges, is positioning herself for reelection, attempting to rally local support against the Trump administration’s immigration agenda.
