Police in South Korea have launched an investigation into famous singer Psy, known globally for his K-Pop hit “Gangnam Style.” The allegations center on claims that Psy illegally acquired prescription medications, specifically psychotropic drugs, without the required hospital visit. The Seoul Seodaemun Police Station reported that both Psy and a doctor from a local university hospital were taken into custody under charges that violate the Medical Service Act.
According to reports, Psy allegedly obtained prescriptions for Xanax and Stilnox since 2022. These medications, commonly prescribed for sleep disorders and anxiety, were allegedly acquired through his manager and other associates acting on his behalf. The agency representing Psy, P Nation, released a statement indicating there were mistakes made in how the prescriptions were handled, while insisting that Psy has a legitimate, diagnosed chronic sleep disorder.
The doctor involved in the case defended himself, claiming that prescriptions were issued following virtual consultations and denying accusations of wrongdoing. Despite this defense, the law in South Korea is clear: prescriptions must be made after a direct consultation with the patient, and third parties are prohibited from obtaining medications on behalf of someone else.
Authorities became aware of the situation following a tip-off and subsequently executed a raid on the university hospital, which resulted in the seizure of medical records. The police’s actions indicate a serious approach to this inquiry, reflecting the laws concerning medical prescriptions in the country.
The Medical Service Act underscores the importance of proper medical protocols in South Korea, emphasizing that only patients may receive prescriptions. Violating this law carries significant consequences, and the ongoing investigation into Psy illustrates the seriousness with which authorities view such allegations.
Psy’s history also complicates matters. In 2012, he faced public backlash after performing controversial lyrics that called for violence against American soldiers during a concert. This prior incident may influence public perception as he navigates the current allegations involving prescription drugs.
As the case unfolds, the implications for both Psy and the medical professionals involved will likely lead to a broader discussion about prescription practices in South Korea’s entertainment industry. It remains to be seen how these allegations will affect Psy’s career and reputation, but the investigation highlights the stringent regulations surrounding medication and healthcare in the country.
