Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) is raising alarms about the potential threat posed by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), labeling its activities as dangerous and, in his view, nearly illegal. In a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel dated September 3, Cotton requested a comprehensive investigation into the organization, asserting that its actions could jeopardize U.S. national security.
Cotton’s concerns echo specific statements made by PYM leader Aisha Nizar at a recent conference in Michigan. During her address at the People’s Conference for Palestine, Nizar urged her supporters to take actions that would disrupt the U.S. F-35 supply chain. Cotton highlighted her declaration that intervening at “one specific node” could significantly impact U.S. military support for Israel. He noted her comments, stating, “We need to be surgical. We need to be strategic,” suggesting that these statements indicate a clear intent to undermine U.S. defense capabilities.
The senator’s letter emphasizes that this is not a new issue. He has previously called attention to PYM’s antisemitic activities and its potential illegal acquisition of tax-exempt donations. Cotton described the organization as harboring “bad actors,” pointing to Nizar’s previous arrest connected to protests that obstructed traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge, directly tying her actions to a broader pattern of anti-American sentiment.
Cotton stated, “She has now taken her anti-American and anti-Semitic bigotry a step further,” underscoring the gravity of Nizar’s rhetoric. He framed her statements as a direct call to violence against U.S. interests, arguing that advocating for actions against those involved in creating vital military assets represents a significant national security risk. Cotton insisted on the importance of the defense supply chain, stating, “The U.S. defense supply chain is key to our military’s ability to fight and win wars. We must protect that supply chain from all enemies, foreign and domestic.”
Adding another layer to the issue, Cotton pointed out that PYM is not without political support in Washington. He mentioned that Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) has previously engaged with members of this controversial group, creating a complex and troubling dynamic within Congress. This connection raises additional questions about the implications of PYM’s actions and rhetoric on broader U.S. security measures.
