Democrats have chosen their nominee for a special congressional election in Tennessee. Aftyn Behn, who has served as a healthcare community organizer, won her party’s nomination on Tuesday. According to The Associated Press, the Dickson County Democratic Party praised Behn, likening her to U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, calling her “our very own AOC of TN,” as reported by The Tennessee Star. This primary field included three state representatives and a consultant, highlighting the competitive nature of the race, particularly in Tennessee’s Republican-leaning 7th Congressional District.
Behn now prepares for a tough battle in the general election set for December 2. She will face a considerable challenge given the district’s political landscape. Former Republican Representative Mark Green held this seat before resigning in June to pursue a career in the private sector. President Trump won this district by a significant margin—about 20 points—in the last presidential election. This voting history suggests that Behn takes on the role of an underdog, as she represents the Democratic Party in an area firmly entrenched in Republican values.
The political dynamic shifts on the Republican side as well, following a crowded primary election. Matt Van Epp, a former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services, emerged victorious from the GOP primary after receiving Trump’s endorsement. Van Epp’s victory underscores Trump’s enduring influence in Republican politics, even as the party faces a spectrum of contenders vying for power.
Currently, Republicans control the House by a slim margin, with 219 seats compared to 213 for the Democrats. This situation leaves two congressional seats vacant: one in Tennessee and another in Texas’ 18th Congressional District, following the passing of Democratic Representative Sylvester Turner earlier this year. Interestingly, Adelita Grijalva, who won a special congressional election in Arizona recently, has yet to be officially sworn in.
In this unfolding political landscape, both major parties face challenges. Behn’s nomination reflects Democrats’ efforts to gain traction in areas typically dominated by Republicans. Meanwhile, the GOP’s internal competition continues as candidates battle not just for their party’s nomination, but also for legislative influence as the country heads toward elections for 2025.
The stakes are high for all involved. As Behn prepares to campaign, she will need to galvanize support, appealing to an electorate that may not align with her party. For the Republicans, holding onto the 7th Congressional District is crucial as they navigate their own internal dynamics and seek to maintain their current majority in the House.
