President Donald Trump’s recent initiative to broaden access to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) has ignited criticism from conservative figures and anti-abortion advocates. On Thursday, the White House outlined its plan to make IVF more affordable, aiming to assist women and families in their quest to have children. “Because we want more babies, to put it very nicely,” Trump stated, adding that new parents should be able to deduct significant expenses associated with newborns from their taxes.

The administration highlights a new partnership intended to reduce costs for fertility medications. Specifically, GONAL-F, a frequently used fertility drug, will be offered through TrumpRx.gov at a remarkable discount, potentially saving women hundreds to thousands per treatment cycle. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimates savings of up to $2,200 per cycle for low- and middle-income women, who can secure an even larger discount.

Despite this effort, prominent voices within the pro-life community voiced their objection to the administration’s approach. Pastor Rich Lusk took to social media, stating that while he agrees with the necessity of raising birth rates, he believes promoting IVF is misguided. He pointed out that “the way IVF is normally carried out results in dead babies,” questioning the moral implications of such a procedure.

This sentiment was echoed by Pastor Brian Sauvé, who labeled IVF as a “wicked practice” and urged alternative solutions to address national birth rates. He suggested that the government should focus on reinstating traditional values and addressing economic issues instead of endorsing IVF.

The Foundation to Abolish Abortion closely scrutinized Trump’s remarks, asserting that common IVF practices lead to the destruction of embryos in their earliest stages of life. They called upon Christians to advocate for the protection of preborn children rather than support practices that could be interpreted as discarding life.

Critics argue that IVF raises profound ethical concerns about life and commodification. End Abortion Now pointed out the grim reality of discarded frozen embryos, framing the process as a reduction of human value to mere consumer choices. Such practices evoke disturbing echoes of eugenics, where the selection of “perfect” attributes leads to the disposability of those deemed unwanted.

Indeed, while Trump is rightly acknowledged for the advances made in protecting life, including the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the embrace of IVF complicates this narrative. Advocates within the pro-life movement caution that the administration may be stepping down a troubling path by endorsing reproductive technologies that contrast with their core principles.
