A law professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) has lost her position after making inflammatory statements regarding the death of political figure Charlie Kirk. Professor Felicia Branch’s comments on social media drew intense scrutiny, emphasizing that free speech can lead to serious repercussions.
Branch’s post, which included phrases like “People have come out caping for the devil that walked among us,” displayed a glaring lack of professionalism. She further challenged Christians, telling them to “study a bit more” and proclaimed, “I will not pull back from CELEBRATING that an evil man died by the method he chose to embrace.” This direct expression of disdain and celebration over a person’s death raised alarms within both the university and the broader community.
In a letter dated October 13, UALR Chancellor Christina S. Drale explained the rationale behind Branch’s termination. Drale noted that Branch’s remarks fell short of the “professional standards expected by the Bowen Law School and the Board of Trustees.” A critical point raised in the letter was Branch’s defense of her comments, claiming she spoke as a private citizen and her posts did not lead to significant disruption. However, Drale dismissed these arguments, indicating that a “warning or reprimand” would be insufficient.
Criticism of Branch’s actions wasn’t limited to university officials. Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin commented on her remarks, stating, “There can be no consideration of someone of such evident low character continuing to instruct future lawyers here in Arkansas.” He defended the importance of academic freedom but made it clear that such freedom does not protect someone who openly celebrates political assassination.
The incident shows a tension between free expression and professional accountability. While academic freedom allows for a broad range of discussions, it does not grant immunity for behavior deemed inappropriate by an institution. Branch’s case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences that follow harmful statements, particularly from individuals in positions of influence. Her dismissal reflects the university’s commitment to maintaining standards of conduct expected from its educators, underscoring that with freedom comes responsibility.
