The recent tragic events involving illegal immigrant drivers with commercial licenses in California have sparked significant outrage and raised pressing questions about safety and accountability. Two fatal crashes, both linked to drivers who should not have been on the road, have brought the issue of immigration policy and licensing standards into the spotlight.

The details are distressing. In October 2023, Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old from India, drove an 18-wheeler into bumper-to-bumper traffic on Interstate 10 without braking, resulting in a catastrophic explosion that claimed at least three lives. Authorities later determined that he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. Singh now faces serious charges, but the situation raises broader concerns about how he obtained his commercial driver’s license from California.

Just weeks prior, Harjinder Singh, another Indian national, caused a deadly wreck in Florida while operating a vehicle under a California-issued commercial license. In both cases, the drivers were not legally permitted to be in the United States yet managed to receive licenses to drive some of the largest vehicles on the road. This pattern points to a troubling oversight in California’s system.

Investigative journalist Bill Melugin underscored the urgency of the issue with a tweet that resonated widely: “ALL of America should be FURIOUS right now.” His post highlighted the alarming ease with which undocumented immigrants can obtain commercial driver’s licenses in California, emphasizing a system that appears negligent in its checks and balances. As Melugin expressed, “Something is SERIOUSLY wrong with how states are handing out CDL licenses like candy to illegals.”

At the heart of the matter is California’s Assembly Bill 60, which allows undocumented individuals to obtain driver’s licenses. Ostensibly, this law aims to promote road safety by ensuring undocumented residents can pass driving tests. However, critics argue that the enforcement of this law is severely lacking, particularly concerning language proficiency and the legal status of applicants. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized California, stating, “This fundamental safety issue impacts you and your family on America’s road.”

Footage from the crash involving Jashanpreet Singh reveals the devastating consequences of inadequate driver oversight. Dashcam evidence shows a truck crashing into stopped vehicles without any braking, leading to destruction and loss of life. California Highway Patrol spokesman Rodrigo Jimenez referred to the incident as a “tragic and preventable” event, emphasizing the critical nature of proper driving skills for commercial vehicle operation.

Singh entered the United States illegally in March 2022 and was released under an immigration policy that allowed him to apply for and receive a commercial license prior to his court hearing. Following the incident, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) moved to take custody of him after criminal proceedings were concluded, highlighting ongoing concerns about federal and state interactions regarding immigration enforcement.

The earlier incident with Harjinder Singh resulted in three fatalities and prompted immediate action from the U.S. State Department, which suspended worker visas for commercial truck drivers. Harjinder, who illegally crossed the southern border in 2018, had also obtained a CDL despite being denied a work permit previously. This case further illustrates the failures in the licensing system that allowed another reckless driver to operate a commercial vehicle.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin was blunt in her assessment: “Three innocent people were killed in Florida because Gavin Newsom’s California Department of Motor Vehicles issued an illegal alien a Commercial Driver’s License—this state of governance is asinine.” Her statement encapsulates the frustrations of many who view the current situation as a preventable tragedy stemming from systematic breakdowns.

As these crashes highlight, federal law mandates that commercial truck drivers must be able to read and understand English for safety. Yet, California’s reluctance to enforce this requirement exacerbates the risks on the roads. Secretary Duffy had warned earlier that $40 million in federal funding would be withheld due to California’s failure to properly enforce English language requirements for its CDL program, expressing frustration that “people are dead” because of this noncompliance.

The evidence from both cases indicates standards may be poorly applied or ignored entirely. The qualifications required for a commercial driver’s license involve rigorous testing around language comprehension and driving abilities. Yet, Jashanpreet Singh’s actions demonstrate that these standards may not be effectively upheld, resulting in a lethal consequence.

Calls are growing for a reevaluation of the relationship between federal immigration authorities and state motor vehicle agencies. Many are advocating for stricter measures to terminate programs that afford undocumented immigrants access to licenses and roadways without thorough background checks. These incidents have further underscored the need for a thorough inspection of the processes that allowed unqualified individuals to drive heavy vehicles.

The tragic fallout from these events is clear: six innocent lives lost due to preventable accidents involving drivers who should not have been behind the wheel of a commercial truck. This has led to increased scrutiny and growing public outrage over the licensing standards and immigration policies that allowed these drivers to operate in the first place.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on accountability. The systemic failures exposed by these incidents demand attention and action to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The public’s concern over safety and proper oversight will likely intensify as more details emerge, placing significant pressure on state agencies and lawmakers to address these critical issues.
