A recent incident at Oklahoma State University has highlighted the ongoing tensions surrounding free speech on campus. A student who identifies as transgender vandalized a display set up by the Young America’s Foundation (YAF), an organization dedicated to conservative principles. This act, captured on video and shared widely, showcases the clash between radical activism and the rights of students to express their beliefs.

The video, originally posted by the popular account Libs of TikTok, reveals the unidentified student defiantly destroying materials from the YAF table, which prominently displayed a message supporting traditional marriage: “Marriage = 1 man + 1 woman.” As the student ripped the materials apart and scattered them across the lawn, conservative peers calmly confronted the vandal. One student attempted to engage, expressing an openness to dialogue despite the disruption. “Hey, Jesus loves you anyway, and I hope you come to your senses and will realize we can have a conversation without you throwing our stuff away,” he said. This response illustrates a stark contrast between the two sides, showcasing the patience of the conservative students despite the vandalism.

The vandal responded with hostility, stating, “I can’t have a conversation with people who don’t think I deserve rights. You don’t deserve a conversation.” This statement encapsulates a growing trend among some activists who dismiss opposing viewpoints outright. Rather than engaging in meaningful discussion, there seems to be a preference for aggression, raising questions about the implications for free speech on campus.

The Oklahoma State University chapter of YAF took immediate action following the incident, reporting it to the university police. In a statement on X, YAF confirmed, “A police report has been filed, and we are working with the OSU Police Department to ensure charges are pressed against this individual.” Such actions demonstrate a commitment to protect their right to peaceful expression on campus—a right that other groups should also respect.

The OSU Police Department has affirmed that an investigation is underway, with charges pending. University spokesperson Mack Burke noted, “Oklahoma State University supports the rights of student groups to express their opinions and speak freely.” This affirmation of free speech is a critical stance amid rising concerns about free expression being stifled in some academic environments.

This incident is not isolated. Reports indicate that conservative groups nationwide are increasingly facing hostility and vandalism. The College Fix documented similar incidents, including a graduate teaching assistant at Illinois State University being dismissed for overturning a Turning Point USA table and threatening rhetoric directed at public figures like former President Donald Trump. This pattern indicates a troubling trend where conservative voices—often viewed as less popular on college campuses—are subject to aggressive opposition.

The vandalism at Oklahoma State University serves as a reminder of the need for respectful discourse. While students have the right to advocate for their beliefs, the destruction of property in the name of activism undermines that principle. As the investigation continues, it will be essential for all sides to reflect on the importance of protecting the rights of individuals to express differing viewpoints without fear of retribution or violence.
