MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, in a predictable diatribe about Kyle Rittenhouse’s trial and gun control, fretted about Rittenhouse’s likely acquittal and what that acquittal means about the state of American society. You can watch him fret and clutch his pearls here:
“From what I’ve seen, I think it’s pretty likely he’ll be acquitted. But there’s also the broader question of what kind of society we want to live in” Hayes says, adding “Do we want a society in which political conflict is settled on the streets between people with guns? One in which everyone is armed and can therefore view the other people armed as a plausible threat?”
Hayes also denigrates Rittenhouse’s well-founded fears about the violent Antifa and BLM rioters as his worrying about a “bogeyman,” presenting the rioters in the best light and the business-protecting youth in the worst possible light.
And that’s not all, in addition to the predictable hand-wringing about vigilantism that accompanies Hayes frets about Rittenhouse’s youth and, of course, that he used one of those scary “assault rifles” we hear so much about from the talking heads:
Again, Rittenhouse was 17 when he killed those two men, not old enough to smoke a cigarette have a beer. In many ways, including in the eyes of the law, he was still a child, a minor. He is being tried as adult to the severity of the crimes he is charged with. But I think, to most sensible people, at least I would hope, the image of a child, high schooler carrying a deadly weapon designed for war doesn`t inspire confidence about the wise, judicious use of that weapon, about good decisions being made.
And whose fault is it, according to Mr. Hayes, that Mr. Rittenhouse was in Kenosha with one of those scary black rifles? Why, the “gun lobby,” of course. As Mr. Hayes says, referring to the supposed society where Americans will settle their political differences with gusn, “That’s the outcome the pro-gun lobby is bringing about.”
But Hayes doesn’t stop with claiming that the NRA wants to create an anarchic society where Americans settle their differences at the point of the gun. Instead, he vigorously and long-windedly attacks the NRA for turning Mr. Rittenhouse into a killer by pushing a pro-freedom message on him, as if the right to keep and bear arms is an evil thing rather than a right enshrined in the Constitution:
Freedom. That`s a message that was being pushed to a 17 year old Kyle Rittenhouse, a child. You hear warnings about the boogeyman of Black Lives Matter and Antifa, and he took this illegally acquired assault weapon, which he admits not for hunting or for home defense, and he throws himself with the fray and Kenosha and he kills two people.
The boy who killed people, the boy who killed people, is then celebrated by the same pro-gun law and order culture that produced him as a hero and a martyr. And he`s bailed out with the help of right-wing activists and he poses for photo gridding in the T-shirt of a long gun-themed Coffee Company…
And Hayes doesn’t stop with attacking the NRA and the rest of the “gun lobby.” He also attacks Mr. Rittenhouse for his choice of weapon, insidiously connecting the youth that was forced to defend himself from Antifa goons with the depraved Columbine shooters:
Looked cool. That cool thing ended the lives of two people. Teenagers do a lot of things because they look cool. A lot of them aren`t good. Hearing that, it is difficult not to be reminded of one of the greatest tragedies in recent American history when 22 years ago, two high schoolers, the same age essentially as Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, one 18, who also thought guns were cool, murdered 12 students and one teacher and wounded dozens more at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
Apparently, self-defense amounts to mass murdering high schoolers.
Lacking, of course, from the segment is any real discussion of what happened that fateful night in Kenosha. Were Hayes to examine those events, he might find that when multiple assailants are attacking a lone man, such as Mr. Rittenhouse, a semi-automatic rifle of the sort Mr. Rittenhouse was using is one of the few weapons capable of taking down those assailants in short order. Were Mr. Rittenhouse to have used a bolt action rifle, a revolver, or a double barrelled shotgun, he might well have been killed by those mob members chasing him down and pointing a handgun at him.
