Zohran Mamdani’s rise in New York City’s political scene is hard to ignore. He represents the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), and his victory is more than just a personal achievement—it signifies a growing acceptance of ideas that many deem dangerous. The parallels to history are concerning.

Throughout the years, we have seen the outcomes of socialist ideologies, particularly in Eastern Europe. After decades of communist rule, countries like East Germany faced a grim reality. With limited options and no real competition, citizens struggled to find basic goods. They were left with a single kind of hammer in a plain brown box and faced years-long waiting lists for a car—the Trabant—the pride of their automotive industry, but hardly a luxurious option.

In these regimes, the proclaimed mission was equality. However, as George Orwell famously highlighted, while everyone might be considered ‘equal,’ the reality was otherwise. The ruling elite enjoyed privileges inaccessible to the average citizen, creating a two-tiered society of desperation and oppression. The promises of state care were hollow; many lived on an income that barely registered in the global economy, trapped by an ineffective system stifling growth.
