Rep. Adelita Grijalva’s entry into Congress has raised eyebrows, particularly with her initial address focusing on a topic many believe is a political distraction: the Epstein files. Recently sworn in to represent Arizona’s 7th District, Grijalva faced a significant delay in her swearing-in process. Over seven weeks went by before she could officially take her seat… a situation that speaks volumes about the dysfunction within the House. However, rather than addressing pressing issues affecting her constituents, she chose to make Jeffrey Epstein the centerpiece of her debut speech.

Her speech came right after a prolonged government shutdown that had serious consequences for many Americans. During this time, federal workers went without pay, military families encountered delays in housing allowances, and small businesses struggled to get the support they needed. Border communities, including those Grijalva serves, experienced disruptions in federal services. Yet, instead of acknowledging these immediate concerns, her focus remained almost entirely on Epstein.

While the call for transparency regarding the Epstein files is undeniably important—the public deserves to know how such a system failed vulnerable individuals—Grijalva’s prioritization raises questions. With millions affected by the shutdown her party contributed to, it seems disingenuous to highlight Epstein as her opening act in Congress. This decision suggests that the priorities of her party lie elsewhere.

Indeed, Democrats are currently grappling with an unpopular platform. Many voters are left questioning their economic policies, their approach to border security, and their overall effectiveness. The party has struggled to offer coherent solutions, particularly amid ongoing inflation and a sense of federal instability. In this context, the quick turn to the Epstein narrative might seem like an attempt to divert attention from their own shortcomings.

What Grijalva and her colleagues have chosen to do reflects a greater trend within the Democratic Party: an embrace of opportunistic messaging. Instead of stepping up to provide real governance during challenging times, they often resort to topics that allow them to posture without delivering actionable solutions. Voters pay attention; they can differentiate between authentic leadership and mere rhetoric.

In her first speech, Grijalva bypassed critical conversations on border insecurity, the cost of living, and the consequences of the federal shutdown. This choice to emphasize Epstein over the pressing issues her district faces signals a troubling trend in political priorities. America deserves leaders who focus on governance, not just catchy soundbites. For many, Grijalva’s initial act in office illustrates where the Democratic leadership’s true values lie… and sadly, it appears that governing is not at the forefront.
