Biden administration spokesman John Kirby is once again in the spotlight, but not for the reasons he might prefer. Democrats and certain media outlets seem determined to create controversy surrounding the decision made during the Trump administration to engage narco-terrorists approaching the U.S. by boat. Senator Mark Kelly, a notable figure from Arizona gearing up for a potential presidential bid in 2028, has joined in this effort, capitalizing on the discord while avoiding the more troubling issues of accountability for his party’s actions.

What stands out is the glaring hypocrisy in this narrative. The critics seem to conveniently ignore the Biden administration’s severe missteps, particularly the tragic drone strike in Afghanistan that resulted in the deaths of ten innocent civilians, including children. This incident, emerging from a failed withdrawal strategy, drew little scrutiny from the media. Instead of demanding accountability, the response was largely muted.

In December 2021, Kirby appeared on MSNBC to address the fallout from this drone strike. “We appreciate that not everyone is going to support this decision,” he explained, attempting to navigate through the backlash. He asserted that the administration had looked at the incident “very very comprehensively” and acknowledged “procedural breakdowns.” What is striking here is Kirby’s lack of accountability for those involved. Instead, he merely promised improvements to processes without any mention of punishment for the individuals responsible.

NBC News documented the aftermath, noting that no U.S. troops would face repercussions for the mistaken drone strike, despite the death of children in that attack. The Pentagon’s review found that operational decisions regarding punishment were left to the commanders, who—along with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin—decided against any disciplinary measures. Kirby, reiterating this stance, stated, “It wasn’t an outcome that we came to without careful thought and consideration,” claiming there wasn’t “a strong enough case to be made for personal accountability.”

The contrasting treatment of actions depending on political affiliations is jarring. Republican-led operations that aim to eliminate narco-terrorists attract the label of “war crimes,” while Democratic-led operations that kill civilians are deemed learning experiences to foster procedural improvements. This disparity raises eyebrows. Why is there a different standard when it comes to accountability?

As this narrative unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that the principles of justice and transparency often take a backseat in political discussions. The shifting tide of scrutiny depending on party lines reflects a deeper issue within the political landscape, where past actions are often downplayed or overlooked based on current affiliations.

In a time where honesty and accountability should be paramount, the focus seems to rest on constructing perceived scandals rather than addressing real tragedies. It’s a frustrating, tangled web that citizens have come to expect—one that underscores the need for a more consistent approach to accountability in government operations.
