Rep. Claudia Tenney brought attention to the controversial policies surrounding New York’s sanctuary state status, highlighting the staggering number of illegal aliens released from jail. According to reports, nearly 7,000 individuals have been released, including 29 linked to homicides, defying requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This raises urgent questions about public safety and accountability.

During an interview with Fox’s Kayleigh McEnany, Tenney described the troubling statistics that reveal the extent of these releases, which also include serious offenses like assaults, burglaries, and sexual predation. She pointed out the negligence from state officials, particularly Attorney General Letitia James, claiming, “She doesn’t care” about the safety implications of these policies. This lack of concern is underscored by James’s focus on prosecuting local sheriffs who attempt to collaborate with ICE under the 287(g) program, which is intended to enhance public safety by allowing local authorities to work with immigration officers on serious criminal cases.

Tenney expressed her alarm about the implications of these policies. She described New York as a dangerous place, especially given its sanctuary status, stating that nearly 90% of individuals on the foreign terror watch list have crossed through the northern border under the current administration. This situation threatens communities across the state, as dangerous criminals are being allowed to roam free.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has echoed these concerns. ICE Director Todd Lyons reached out to Attorney General James, urging her to put the safety of New Yorkers first and to honor ICE detainer requests. The gravity of the situation is reflected in the numbers: since January, 6,947 criminal aliens have been freed, including those involved in serious crimes.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin also voiced concerns, criticizing the release of these individuals back into communities. She emphasized the risks involved, stating that “Criminal illegal aliens should not be released back onto our streets to terrorize more innocent Americans.” This statement reflects a growing worry that sanctuary policies are endangering public safety.

Amid this turmoil, newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has pledged to actively oppose ICE and limit deportations, promising to allow them only in cases of serious criminal convictions. This stance raises further questions about the future of law enforcement collaboration with federal authorities under his administration.

Overall, the release of thousands of illegal aliens poses significant challenges to public safety in New York. As Tenney and others continue to highlight these issues, the conflict between sanctuary policies and community safety remains a critical point of contention in the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement and local law practices.
