In the realm of international politics, the antics of some leaders often stand out as more spectacle than substance. Recently, the focus has shifted to Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, and Friedrich Merz, who are attempting to align themselves as players in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, with their dismal approval ratings, these politicians might be better suited to a different title: the three stooges.

Each one of them faces significant challenges at home. Keir Starmer’s popularity is sinking, with only 23% approval against 70% disapproval, according to recent polling data. Emmanuel Macron in France has an astonishingly low approval of just 11%, while Friedrich Merz in Germany shares a less dismal but still troubling figure of 23%. The public perception of these leaders reveals a stark reality: they are largely viewed as ineffective, yet they have positioned themselves to involve themselves in the vital peace process in Ukraine.

The political landscape remains fraught with irony. These three leaders—familiar figures on the international stage—are desperately trying to assert their relevance while fundamentally lacking the support of their own citizens. Instead of playing a constructive role in the negotiations, they risk becoming obstacles to progress. The specter of former President Trump looms large as they seek to undermine his initiatives regarding Ukraine. They may want to be seen as leaders, but their strategies are counterproductive.

Moreover, the upcoming meeting set to take place in London showcases this paradox. Starmer will host an assembly that includes Macron, Merz, and the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This gathering, under the guise of discussing Ukraine’s needs, could likely become another attempt by these leaders to assert influence without any real basis for it. Their grasp of the situation is tenuous at best, especially with Ukraine’s frontlines collapsing and the ongoing negotiations facing intense pressure.

Macron’s recent comments reflect a continuing struggle to maintain an image of authority and support. He emphasized, “Ukraine can count on our unwavering support” as he made pledges regarding security guarantees. However, rhetoric alone does not equate to resources or effectiveness. While he condemns Russian actions and calls for pressure to be maintained, the cold reality is that France, Germany, and the UK are operating under heavy constraints—financial, military, and social.

This is all happening while the real work is managed under U.S. mediation. Trump’s influence is undeniable, even as these leaders attempt to sideline him. They may seek to position themselves against his approach, but if they are not careful, they could find themselves entirely outmaneuvered. If Trump decides to disengage, these leaders will be left holding the complex and costly issues surrounding Ukraine with increasingly limited tools at their disposal.

In this volatile climate, the meeting in London is less about creating solutions and more about maintaining appearances. Macron, Starmer, and Merz governing without solid public backing will struggle to garner the respect or adherence needed to influence negotiations meaningfully.

Viral videos and social media chatter suggest that their struggles are becoming as public as their political plans. The mention of Macron amid allegations of illicit behavior only adds fuel to the fire of public distrust. While they see themselves as players on a significant stage, the reality is that they are teetering on the edge of irrelevance. Distrust and disapproval are potent in the eyes of their voters, and the three are rapidly running out of credibility.

The objective is clear: they need to project strength and unity in support of Ukraine. Yet instead, it appears they are each playing a role that could undermine that very message. As they gather in London, one can’t help but wonder if they are indeed the three Musketeers, or if their actions will solidify their status as the three stooges of global politics.
