Empty Nation: US Pop. Growth at Lowest Rate Ever

It’s not just outmigration that is ravaging blue states, though that’s certainly a major issue for states like California and New York.

Rather, a lack of childbirths is quickly becoming a problem for the entire US, as population growth plummeted to a minuscule 0.1% between 2020 and 2021, with the growth of under 1 million people being the lowest number since 1937, a time when the population was far smaller and the Great Depression still occurring. As ABC News reported:

U.S. population growth dipped to its lowest rate since the nation’s founding during the first year of the pandemic as the coronavirus curtailed immigration, delayed pregnancies and killed hundreds of thousands of U.S. residents, according to figures released Tuesday.

The United States grew by only 0.1%, with an additional 392,665 added to the U.S. population from July 2020 to July 2021, bringing the nation’s count to 331.8 million people, according to population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The census bureau report mentioned, the same one that provided details on the outmigration problem, contains some dire facts for America. Among them is the fact that, for the first time, more population growth came from international migration than new births, again according to ABC:

For the first time, international migration surpassed natural increases that come from births outnumbering deaths. There was a net increase of nearly 245,000 residents from international migration but only about 148,000 from new births outnumbering deaths.

That means that America is now generally relying on immigration, rather than procreation, to increase the size of its population.

Yet worse is that in many states, even red ones, deaths outnumbered births. For example, though Florida gained many residents because of blue state refugees fleeing there, more than 45,000 more people died than were born in Florida, meaning that the fertility rate isn’t anywhere near the replacement rate (slightly over 2 births per woman).

While the nation as a whole still managed to produce about 148,000 more new births than deaths, that low of a number is shocking, as it is the smallest spread in about eighty years.

America is at risk of following the same grey path as the once-might states of Western Europe and Japan; without a massive boost to fertility, our population growth will continue to slow and our population will continue to age, with dire consequences for both the American culture and economy.
