Republicans have finally rediscovered their spines and are standing up to the cities and states that gleefully encourage a departure from American norms.
In fact, Rubio, usually not a conservative stalwart, and others released a bill that would act to reign in those jurisdictions that are letting non-citizens vote.
The others supporting the bill include senators more known for their conservative attitudes, including Steve Daines of Montana, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, John Kennedy, of Louisiana, Rick Scott of Florida and James Lankford, R-Oklahoma.
Announcing the bill, called the Protecting Our Democracy by Preventing Foreign Citizens from Voting Act, Rubio said:
“It’s ridiculous that states are allowing foreign citizens to vote. However, if states and localities do let those who are not U.S. citizens to vote in elections, they shouldn’t get U.S. citizen taxpayer money.”
Congressman Duncan, who plans to put forward similar legislation in the House of Representatives, said:
“Voting in this country is a right that should solely be limited to American citizens. Allowing non-citizens or illegal immigrants to vote, even if only in state or local elections, gives foreign nationals influence on some of the most important decisions impacting our families, our rights, and our representation in government”
Thus, predictably, the bill would prevent any state or municipality that allows non-citizens to vote from receiving federal funds, with jurisdictions having to certify that they do not permit non-citizens to vote to receive any federal funds allotted to them.
The bill comes as places like New York City and San Francisco have started allowing non-citizens to vote, a development that many who are already concerned with the security of the vote are very much against.
While the bill is an excellent idea, and could prove effective if ever passed, it will likely be dead on arrival now, as the left controls the House and occasionally the Senate, depending on how Manchin votes.
Still, with a red wave predicted for 2022, the bill could become a reality if Republicans stick to their guns once it counts and Brandon is somehow pressured not to veto it.
