The Department of Homeland Security recently announced that more than 2.5 million illegal immigrants have exited the United States since President Donald Trump took office at the beginning of this year. This dramatic figure points to what the agency describes as a comprehensive immigration enforcement strategy leading to what it claims is the “most secure border in American history.”

According to the report released by DHS, illegal border crossings have plummeted by 93% year-over-year. The significant reduction in drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, is also highlighted; the agency reported a decrease of 50%. Moreover, hundreds of thousands of criminal illegal immigrants have been arrested or deported, marking a sharp contrast to the previous administration’s policies.

“The accomplishments we have seen in less than a year are historic,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are making America safe again and putting the American people first.” Her comments affirm the administration’s commitment to securing the border and combating criminal activity.

Of the 2.5 million individuals who left the U.S., DHS estimates that approximately 1.9 million self-deported, while more than 622,000 were formally deported. Throughout this process, the administration has utilized innovative strategies to encourage self-deportation, including the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home Mobile App. This app offers a complimentary plane ticket home and a $1,000 exit bonus as incentives for undocumented immigrants to return to their countries.

Additionally, DHS reported the seizure of nearly 540,000 pounds of drugs this fiscal year, which amounts to a nearly 10% increase from the same timeframe in 2024. The U.S. Coast Guard also played its part in combating drug trafficking, retrieving approximately 470,000 pounds of cocaine, enough to potentially kill 177 million individuals. Such statistics illustrate the agency’s focus on drug enforcement as part of its larger mission.

Furthermore, DHS asserted that taxpayers have saved more than $13 billion, crediting various agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Secret Service, for returning to their essential functions. In recognition of exemplary service, Secretary Noem awarded bonuses to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers who demonstrated remarkable dedication during a challenging government shutdown.

Amidst all these achievements, DHS emphasized its ongoing commitment to ensuring safety and prioritizing the needs of American citizens. “Countless lives have been saved this year,” the agency stated, reinforcing the narrative of a renewed focus on law enforcement and national security.

This report asserts a bold narrative: that President Trump’s policies have not only reshaped immigration enforcement in the U.S. but have also established new benchmarks for border security and public safety. The implications of such changes are noteworthy and signal a significant shift in the country’s immigration policies, moving towards stringent enforcement and heightened safety measures.
