Democratic congressional candidate Esther Kim Varet is facing scrutiny over a misleading strategy employed on her campaign website. A photograph of a random black woman was used to suggest an endorsement by Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett. Business Insider first reported the incident, highlighting the disconnect Varet’s campaign has with facts and representation. Currently, the endorsement claim has been removed from her site.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) weighed in sharply. Spokesman Christian Martinez slammed Varet, labeling her campaign as “racist, arrogant, and totally out of touch” on social media. His message was clear: the California candidate, with a history of making aggressive comments about her opponents, is not fit for Congress.
Varet, who comes from a family of Korean immigrants, has previously hurled racial barbs at her opponent, the Republican incumbent Young Kim. She has referred to Kim as a “Judas” to the Korean-American community while also mocking Kim’s English accent. This strategy of personal attacks was evident when Varet described her as a “power-hungry Korean-born immigrant.”
In a moment of reflection, Varet admitted in an Instagram post that her campaign tactics have been “sloppy.” This acknowledgment came after backlash for her previous comments aimed at Kim. The remarks not only illustrate a candidate struggling to find her voice but also raise questions about her campaign’s direction.
Crockett did lend Varet some support in May, suggesting that the Congresswoman appreciates Varet’s approach, though it remains unclear whether an official endorsement took place. Crockett highlighted the struggles facing constituents, hinting that these issues can only be addressed through “REAL representation” like that offered by Varet.
In terms of funding, Varet’s campaign has collected over $1.2 million, which is significant for a newcomer, though it pales in comparison to Kim’s cash on hand, which exceeds $4.7 million. Varet’s path may be further complicated by California’s recent gerrymandering efforts. The passage of Proposition 50 has reshaped Kim’s district in Orange County, potentially enhancing Republican support and creating a tough primary battlefield for both incumbents.
As this race develops, the spotlight will likely remain on Varet’s ability to clarify her messaging and distinguish herself in a crowded Democratic primary. Meanwhile, the fallout from her campaign tactics begs the question of whether such strategies will resonate with voters or ultimately backfire.
