The victim, Aurelio Zhunio-Orbez, was a 56-year-old cab driver originally from Ecuador who legally entered the United States. His body was discovered in the Croton Falls Reservoir after he was reported missing. Zhunio-Orbez’s last known location was at the Brewster train station, where he picked up the suspect.
The alleged murderer, Santos Paulino Vazquez-Ramirez, is said to have strangled Zhunio-Orbez after he was picked up at the Brewster Metro-North station. This trip would typically cost around $40. According to coworkers, the two had clashed before, possibly over a previous fare, which adds a personal element to the tragedy.
After the assault, Vazquez-Ramirez reportedly dragged Zhunio-Orbez’s body into the woods and disposed of it in the reservoir, an area critical to New York City’s water supply. He then stole the victim’s taxi and abandoned it days later near the Purdy’s train station. This series of actions paints a picture of calculated brutality.
The investigation swiftly led authorities to Vazquez-Ramirez. He was tracked through video surveillance back to his residence in Pawling. Following his confession, he now faces serious charges, including murder and robbery, and is being held without bail.

He allegedly crossed into the United States illegally in 2013 and received a final order of removal in 2016 but remained in the country.
