Bipartisan lawmakers on the Select Committee on China are sounding the alarm over Beijing’s military actions near Taiwan. These officials have made it clear that Congress is closely monitoring the situation. “As the world turns toward a new year, the People’s Liberation Army’s live-fire military exercises around Taiwan represent a deliberate escalation by Beijing,” said Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich., who chairs the committee, alongside ranking member Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill. This joint statement highlights rising concerns as China intensifies its military presence in the region.

China has launched a two-day show of strength, conducting military drills that include firing rockets into waters surrounding Taiwan. The display features an array of weaponry, from amphibious assault ships to bombers and drones, demonstrating a coordinated effort to assert dominance. “These drills are intended to intimidate Taiwan and other democracies in the region and to undermine peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific,” Moolenaar and Krishnamoorthi stressed, signaling a significant shift in China’s approach as international tensions escalate.

These military maneuvers are part of a long history of China’s saber-rattling around Taiwan. Beijing views the island as a breakaway province and appears unabashed in pushing boundaries. In contrast, former President Donald Trump minimized the threat during a recent statement, emphasizing his “great relationship” with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He acknowledged that China has engaged in military exercises in the area for the past two decades, suggesting a certain level of normalization regarding such displays.

House lawmakers contend that these shows of power are strategies employed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to extend its influence beyond national borders. By practicing aggressive military tactics, the CCP is attempting to reshape the balance of power in the region through intimidation. The lawmakers reiterated their commitment to supporting Taiwan, asserting that “The United States stands with Taiwan and fellow democracies,” reinforcing the notion of alliances in the Indo-Pacific.

This situation surrounding Taiwan highlights the significant geopolitical stakes at play. As tensions continue to rise, the actions of both China and the United States will be critical in shaping future relations, not only with Taiwan but also among regional allies. The commitment from U.S. lawmakers serves as a reminder of the enduring conflict in the region and the delicate balance that must be maintained to ensure peace and stability.
