CNN has entered the spotlight to cover a significant scandal in Minnesota involving allegations of taxpayer-funded fraud at daycare centers. However, based on their track record, expecting fair or thorough reporting is unrealistic.

Recently, Anderson Cooper aired footage featuring reporter Whitney Wild on location in Minnesota, interviewing YouTuber Nick Shirley. Shirley’s viral video, which highlights questionable activities surrounding over $100 million in federal funding, has initiated a federal investigation into these daycare centers.

Rather than taking the opportunity to investigate the claims earnestly, Wild seemed more intent on undermining Shirley. Her questioning, rather than investigating the issues presented by Shirley, exemplifies CNN’s approach. When Wild asked whether Shirley had attempted to visit the daycare facilities during business hours, he confirmed he had. He articulated his concerns about the places he’d observed, stating, “The point is… blacked out doors, they can’t give you any information. You call that number, no one answers.”

Wild, however, deflected his concerns by suggesting that it’s normal for daycare centers to be locked for safety reasons. This retort was puzzling, especially as Shirley pressed on about the lack of clear enrollment information. When he challenged Wild’s viewpoint, noting that there should be a reception area, she responded, “No, every daycare is locked.” Such insistence strips away important context, juxtaposing Shirley’s claims against her dismissal of underlying concerns.

In attempting to discredit Shirley, CNN inadvertently bolstered his contentions. After she asked if Shirley was absolutely sure of his claims, the network shifted focus to Wild making calls to the daycare centers in question. “We reached out to several of the daycares featured in the now-viral video. Only one daycare facility answered and said they are a legitimate business,” she reported. This statement is not disproof; rather, it inadvertently leaned toward validating Shirley’s assertions. Shoddy investigative tactics shone through when Wild concluded that the mere existence of a single center saying they’re legitimate sufficed as proof of innocence.

Wild’s closing remarks featured a return to the daycare in question, now filled with children. “You’re saying that this is a fraudulent daycare… there are kids being dropped off right now,” she pointed out. However, Shirley countered effectively, “Yes, the commission of children literally said a week ago this place was closed. They’re showing face right now.”

A peculiarity captured the moment: Shirley donned a hoodie emblazoned with the poorly spelled logo of the Quality “Learing” Center, highlighting negligence not just in operations but also in branding. The New York Post corroborated Shirley’s claim, citing Tikki Brown, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families. Brown confirmed that the Quality “Learing” Center had indeed been permanently closed, with its owners putting on a façade to appear legitimate.

CNN missed a chance to engage in substantive journalism, choosing instead to revert to documented habits of superficiality. The encounter digressed from meaningful inquiry into a spectacle of ineptitude, ultimately reducing the integrity of news gathering to entertainment. In this instance, it seems CNN’s operations have transformed into a vessel more suited to disseminating propaganda than disseminating fact.
