Minnesota’s day care fraud scandal is drawing attention beyond state lines, suggesting that the issue may be more widespread than previously thought. YouTuber Nick Shirley’s investigation into the mismanagement of taxpayer funds has become a catalyst for inquiries in other states. As The Center Square reported on its own investigation in Washington state, it found alarming signs of similar problems. Taxpayer-subsidized day care facilities are under scrutiny, leading to concerns about the misappropriation of funds.

A visit to Brightstar Early Learning revealed that, despite receiving $141,686 in taxpayer subsidies for the latter half of 2025, no one could confirm whether child care services were provided at that site. A woman on scene rebuffed inquiries, stating, “I don’t have to answer,” clearly defensive and more interested in recording the journalist than clarifying the situation. This indicates an unwillingness to engage with the public about how public funds are being utilized.

Another facility, Eyow Childcare Inc., raised questions as well. Located in a home, it garnered $158,931 in subsidies for just a few months. When journalists returned to the address listed, the homeowner called the police but was informed that the journalists had the right to stand on public property. This response raises eyebrows about overall transparency and accountability.

In Minnesota, many of the questionable day care centers have ties to the Somali community. This pattern continues in Federal Way, Washington, where 12 out of 25 home-based day care providers are identified as Somali. Each of these places accepts multiple state subsidies, highlighting a troubling consistency. In a filmed exchange, a Somali woman confronted inquiries from a journalist with hostility, stating, “I don’t have to tell you what I have, what I don’t have.” Such reactions suggest a culture of secrecy surrounding operations that handle tax dollars.

Ohio is also under suspicion. Republican Rep. Josh Williams called for an investigation into similar allegations there. His letter, signed by 42 lawmakers, expressed the need for unannounced visits and audits of child care facilities benefiting from public funding. He wrote about escalating concerns regarding misappropriation: “These allegations raise serious concerns regarding program integrity, the responsible use of taxpayer dollars, and the overall credibility of Ohio’s publicly funded child care system.” Williams emphasizes that inspections are crucial for deterring fraud and restoring faith in these programs.

California adds to the chorus of allegations. In 2023, four individuals, including a couple, faced charges in a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme involving the UMI Learning Center. They were accused of falsely reporting employment and classes to illegally secure benefits, resulting in sentences of up to 27 months in prison and restitution ranging from $101,153 to $3.7 million. Such legal actions underscore systemic vulnerabilities across multiple states.

Despite this alarming trend, mainstream media coverage has been limited. While CNN has documented Shirley’s findings, their approach seemed less about investigation and more focused on discrediting him, sparking skepticism about their commitment to transparency. Interestingly, many of these issues occur within states under Democratic leadership. This raises a critical question: Is the failure to monitor and manage these funds a result of incompetence, or is there a deeper issue at play, possibly involving the funneling of taxpayer dollars into political campaigns?

The connections between leadership, financial oversight, and integrity in publicly funded programs remain vital areas to explore. As investigations unfold, the emphasis must remain on accountability and transparency to ensure taxpayer money is used effectively and genuinely benefits children and families in need.
