New York Attorney General Letitia James and her office are not having a very good day. At least not as far as the fraud case involving former President Donald Trump is concerned. James is now facing serious questions regarding the case, as an Appeals court singals that it could end up siding with Trump in the fight over his $454 million fine. Trump and his legal team are asking the court to toss out the judgment completely.
The Appeals court, according to a report from the U.K.’s Daily Mail, wanted to know why the penalties in the case have been set at close to half a billion dollars — seems a bit steep, wouldn’t you agree? — and who was harmed in the case as neither party involved sustained any loss in cash. Well, I think we can all safely say that the only reason James and her office have pursued this case against Trump is to utilize the legal system as a weapon to punish him for being in the 2024 presidential election in the hope he would somehow step down or disqualify himself.
None of the parties against Trump are concerned about prosecuting him because he actually did something wrong. It’s all about removing the biggest threat to the implementation of the progressive agenda.
Justice Arthur Engoron in February ordered the former president pay $454.2 million in penalties and interest for inflating his net worth to dupe lenders and insurers into giving him better terms. The civil case was brought by New York state Attorney General Letitia James. The lawyers were back in court on Thursday as Trump seeks to have the judgement thrown out. The panel of five appeal judges bombarded Deputy New York Solicitor General Judith Vale with questions about the extent of James’s authority, the lack of victims in the conduct and the size of the penalty.
At least two of the judges seemed skeptical of the case against Trump, and interrupted her opening statement to ask whether there were other examples of the state suing over private business transactions between sophisticated parties using a law designed to protect market integrity. ‘The immense penalty in this case is troubling,’ said Justice Peter Moulton. ‘How do you tether the amount that was assessed by the Supreme Court to the harm that was caused here where the parties left these transactions happy?’
Vale replied, ‘Although this is a large number, it’s a large number for a couple reasons. One, because there was a lot of fraud and illegality.’
The former president currently owes $90 million for federal civil penalties for allegedly defaming a writer who later leveled accusations of sexual abuse at him and was convicted in May on several criminal charges concerning an alleged “hush money” payment made to former porn star Stormy Daniels. We all know how trustworthy mattress actresses are, right?
As for Trump, he has continually denied any wrongdoing concerning the allegations made against him.
Justice David Friedman pressed Vale on whether there was any precedent for the attorney general suing over transactions involving sophisticated parties where neither ‘lost any money.’ ‘Every case that you cite involves damage to consumers, damage to the marketplace. … We don’t have anything like that here,’ Friedman said.
It’s obvious the whole thing is a sham. Again, it’s about punishing Trump, making him suffer, and hoping that by doing so he’ll willingly quit the presidential race or at least be so disgraced no one will want to vote for him. However, I don’t think that’s going to happen. With each attempt by the radical left to take the man down, he grows stronger and stronger among his influence with the people.
And this is a lesson liberals just can’t seem to understand.
