This past May the Russian-collusion probe under special counsel John Durham celebrated its second anniversary with little fanfare. In fact, no one in the mainstream media except for a few Conservative outlets on the internet even bothered to mention it.
You might recall Durham was the special federal prosecutor from Connecticut tasked with the responsibility of investigating the organ of the Russian-collusion hoax. He was later given special counsel status from then Attorney General Bill Barr to hopefully protect the investigation from the incoming Biden Administration.
The anticipation that Durham was on the threshold of completing his investigation before the 2020 presidential election seemed likely. However, as weeks turned into months and Election Day drew closer, an announcement came from Barr that Durham’s investigation had suddenly widened, delaying the report.
Many critical thinking Conservatives believed that Durham would live up to his reputation as a no-nonsense prosecutor, unafraid to bring indictments against those who committed the act of treason against America.
However after two plus years, it seems obvious that Durham (like Barr) will disappoint us all and simply fade quietly away.
There’s little doubt Durham would pay a heavy price both personally and politically under the Biden administration if he actually decided to indict Obama-era FBI and Justice Department officials (of which Biden himself was a part).
A recent poll also revealed that a stunning 67% of Americans are unaware of the Durham investigation. Some on the internet who are familiar with the probe wondered if Durham himself falls within that category.
In a March interview former President Trump also asked sarcastically, “Where’s Durham?” Adding, “Is he a living, breathing human being? Will there ever be a Durham report?”
Tom Fitton, president of the Conservative action group Judicial Watch, also weighed in on the Durham debacle, “To say there has been a federal investigation into these FBI abuses and there has been one plea deal is to condemn it, you are describing failure.”
“Failure,” is perhaps the only way to describe Durham’s pathetic investigation after it was revealed by those familiar with the probe that the 71 year old former federal prosecutor hasn’t interviewed any of the key players. People like former FBI Director James Comey, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, or Special Agent Peter Strzok.
Moreover, the only criminal indictment thus far is against a low level former FBI attorney named Kevin Cliesmith who was charged with altering an email concerning Carter Page. Cliesmith received 12 months probation and 400 hours of jail time.
Also according to the Washington Times the Durham probe was most active during its first 6-months of operation spending roughly $1.5 million dollars investigating the organ of Russian collusion into the 2016 presidential election.
After that, initial time frame the investigation seemed to lose focus and purpose which leaves many Conservatives to speculate that the probe is nothing more than a sham.
Fitton surmises that the cost of the probe (small potatoes by Washington standards) suggests that Durham was never serious about exposing malfeasance by Obama-era officials, stating; “The budget demonstrates what I think observers have already concluded: The investigation is low energy, and he’s disinterested in getting to the bottom of the worst government corruption scandal in government history.”
Whether Durham was threatened, intimidated or bribed into slow-walking the probe we’ll never know. Suffice it to say we’ll add this to the ever-growing list of disappointments when it comes to government accountability.
