On Wednesday the U.S. Senate voted 52-48 in favor of repealing President Joe Biden’s federal vaccine mandate for private businesses. The vote was one in a recent series of losses for the struggling Biden administration.
Last Tuesday a federal judge blocked the last of the Biden administration’s COVID-19 vaccine mandates for businesses, saying the government exceeded its authority with a requirement that millions of employees of federal contractors be inoculated.
U.S. District Judge Stan Baker in Savannah, Georgia, said Congress did not clearly authorize the president to use procurement to impose a vaccine requirement on contractors that will have ‘vast economic and political significance.’
He ruled that Executive Order 14042 – which on September 9 brought in the mandate for federal contractors – was not lawful.
Additionally, federal judges have already issued stays regarding mandates. One that applies to businesses with 100 or more employees and another one for a vaccine mandate targeting health care workers across the U.S.
Wednesday’s vote has the left losing their collective, Marxists minds, as Moderate Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Jon Tester (D-MT) made the difference in the end.
Per their earlier commitments, both sided with Republicans to repeal the mandate under the “Congressional Review Act,” which would allow Congress to review executive orders. Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN), who sponsored the bill, said the Biden policy had “Main Street scared.”
It’s got Main Street America scared,” Braun said. “They’re worried about, well, what does this mean on other issues? Anybody who thinks this is a good idea, imagine the next time it happens when you’re on the wrong side on whatever the merits of the case would be.”
Earlier this week Jon Tester who represents the “Big Sky Country”, conservative state of Montana, indicated that he will vote along with Republicans to stop Biden’s mandate. On Tuesday the senator told NBC News; “I’m not crazy about mandates,”
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced last week that he does “not support any government vaccine mandate on private businesses.”
“I do not support any government vaccine mandate on private businesses. That’s why I have cosponsored and will strongly support a bill to overturn the federal government vaccine mandate for private businesses,”
Prior to the vote, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) went postal comparing GOP opposition to vaccine mandates with flat-earthers. “Some of the anti-vaxxers here in this chamber remind me of what happened 400 years ago when people were clinging to the fact that the sun revolved around the Earth. They just didn’t believe science. Or 500 years ago when they were sure the Earth was flat,” Schumer said.
The only consultation for Biden is Speaker Pelosi will probably hold her slim majority together in the U.S. House, killing the bill.
Either way, this repudiation by a majority in the U.S. Senate has to sting and could act as additional political debris jamming up the administration’s wheels of progress, they so desperately want to continue up to the 2022 mid-terms.
