We’ve all heard that popular metaphor “what goes around comes around”. Democrats around the country, especially within the blue states run by other Democrats, are feeling the wrath of their defund the police policies as crime across the nation progresses.
On Wednesday afternoon, South Philadelphia Congresswoman Mary Gary Scanlon (D-PA), an outspoken advocate of defunding the police, was carjacked at gunpoint after touring FDR Park in South Philly. The 62 year old Democrat voted for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would significantly reduce the budget of every police department in the state.
The brazen gunpoint attack took place around 2:45 p.m. as the lawmaker was walking back to her car parked on Pattison Avenue. She was rushed by two armed men who demanded her car keys and personal belongings.
A spokesperson for the congresswoman told reporters Scanlon was “physically OK, but her vehicle and possessions are gone.”
“Scanlon thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for their swift response, and appreciates the efforts of both the Sergeant at Arms in DC and her local police department for coordinating with Philly PD to ensure her continued safety,” the spokesman said.
The congresswoman was also one of 125 lawmakers who cosponsored the “Mental Health Justice Act” which would allocate grants to communities, allowing unarmed “mental health professionals” instead of police officers to respond to a crisis situation.
Philadelphia is in the midst of a severe police staffing shortage.

In 2021, homicides are up 24% and shootings 25%.

Earlier this month, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner held a news conference in response to the crime surge within the City of Brotherly Love. “We don’t have a crisis of lawlessness, we don’t have a crisis of crime, we don’t have a crisis of violence,” he said, according to Fox News. “It’s important that we don’t let this become mushy and bleed into the notion that there is some kind of big spike in crime. There isn’t. There is not a big spike in crime. … There is not a big spike in violent crime. Neither one of these things is true.”
Within moments of those comments, Krasner was forced to back-pedal after receiving backlash from nearly all quarters.
Meanwhile, Illinois State Senator Kimberly Lightford and her husband Eric McKennie were also carjacked on Tuesday night in a suburb 20 minutes outside of Chicago.
Lightford, the Illinois Black Caucus chairwoman, also supports cutting police budgets in the state (to the tune of $59 million dollars) while crime soars within the windy city.
According to the police report, “At about 9:45 p.m., three masked gunmen driving a Dodge Durango SUV stole Lightford’s vehicle in the 2000 block of South 20th Avenue.”
A police dispatch recording shows police were initially confused about whether the senator was a victim. “All I got is a female who’s not forthcoming with information, saying she was in the vehicle that was taken, doesn’t know what kind of car it was, says there was shots fired,” an officer said. “Unknown if this is going to be bonafide or not.”
Minutes later, the officer followed up saying, “She’s saying it had something to do with a state senator, Kimberly Lightford.”
It appears that Lightford perhaps didn’t want to initially be identified, and who can blame her after attempting to cut police budgets within the state…what goes around comes around.
