In 2018, U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), in her attempt to serve as Speaker, again, struck a deal with far-left members in the Democratic party, which paved the way for her to reclaim the gavel she lost eight years ago.
Pelosi, who previously served as Speaker from January 4, 2007 – January 3, 2011, agreed to not seek the speakership again after four years while also announcing support for a three-term limit for Democratic leadership that never materialized.
After nabbing another term in 2021, despite party infighting, the 80-year-old Pelosi noted that the term limits never happened but stated, “what I said then is whether it passes or not I will abide by those limits that are there.”
Speaker Pelosi, D-Calif., has yet to officially announce her decision for 2022 and beyond. Last year, she implicitly reaffirmed a 2018 promise that her current term would be the last one she would serve as speaker of the House.
The speaker said in 2018 that she would limit herself to two terms – or four years – as the top lawmaker in the House.
More recently, Pelosi has dodged questions about whether she will run for reelection.
She has raised some eyebrows though. During an interview with Morning Joe’s host, Mika Brezinski, Pelosi was asked during a free association game with Brezinski how she feels about the word “retirement,” the 81-year-old Pelosi quipped, “What’s that?”
If Pelosi decides not to run in next year’s election, she’ll join a long list of Democrats who are bowing out ahead of what is projected to be a tough midterm election for their party.
Rep. Thomas Suozzi, D-N.Y., this week became the 18th House Democrat to say he would not run for reelection in 2022. Suozzi is running for governor of New York instead.
Suozzi’s move will likely embolden Republicans hoping to flip his congressional district from blue to red in next year’s midterm elections, where the GOP needs a net gain of just five seats to regain the chamber’s majority.
